Lag in responding to screen taps

Hi folks,

In the last couple of days my Axim x51v has become very slow to respond to screen taps right after I turn it on from standby or after a soft reset. I'll tap on the screen and nothing will happen for several seconds and then all of a sudden everything will catch up to my screen taps. I haven't installed anything new or changed anything significant since it started. I tried putting power setting to maximum performance to see if it helped but it made no difference. Once it finally does respond to my screen taps it behaves normally until the next time I put wake it from standby or soft reset again. Any suggestions?

Sound like compaction kicking in. If you're using IE a lot, try cleaning the cache often. If the cache gets too big, deleting them might take too long that it would seem like your PDA froze, just be patient and let it delete these files. If this doesn't help, try relocating your program files to your sd card. This will help lessen the frequency of the axim running the compaction thread.

Hmmm… I don't browse on the Axim that much but when I do I use NetFront and not IE. I've done SKTools Auto Clean, which I think clears the cache for both, but I'm still getting the lag.

I understand that from your previous posts that you are having problems related to your CF card. Could this be a source of your problem? Where do you store your program files? I heard upgrading to A12 solved this problem. I am on A06 however and haven't seen this problem yet.

There's a great little app, called Hibernate. I run it every time I do a soft reset, it clears up the problem for a few soft resets.

Just download the attachment, unzip the exe file, and copy it into your Axim's /Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder. Then run it whenever you want to. Or you can just put it in the Start Menu folder, like I do.
Attached Files:
File Type: zip Hibernate.zip (1.6 KB, 9 views)

@ dvmed: I was having CF problems on my original unit after updating to A12, but I received a replacement from Dell and kept it at A06 and have not had any CF problems on this unit so far. I do install most of my programs on CF, though, except for Wisbar Advance 2, Today plugins, SK Tools, and a few other things. The lag problem I'm experiencing now is happening mostly on the today screen and with the start menu, so I wouldn't think it is a CF problem… but I will take it out and see what happens with it removed for the process of elimination.

@ gadgetnerd: What is this Hibernate program and what makes you think it will help with my problem? In general, I don't like to pile on more software when I'm trying to fix things… especially software I know nothing about. What is the source of this application? Can you point me to the developer's Web site?

I was having the same problem last nite.. Only the second day for my x51v... I didn't know what's going on, so talked to Dell tech for like a hour... Eventually, she gave me a case # and told me to phone customer care to request for a new unit... So, put away and head to bed, this morning I checked the unit and the touch screen is working as new again..... So I guess, patient is the real key, espeically if the unit is brand new.........

Ok, I'm pretty sure I've figured it out from the process of elimination. I have alarmToday running inside a PocketBreeze tab. alarmToday was set to show 20 lines of events, but when I reduced the number to 7, the lag went away.

Well at one point I kept impatiently tapping and tapping trying to get something to happen and when it finally kicked in and processed all my taps I had accidentally changed an appointment. Didn't want to risk that happening again.

You can wait 3 sec and it will be ok, do not tap while it is freezed. to my mind it is some flash card or soft mulfunction.

It was lagging more than 3 seconds. Anyway, as I posted above, I found the problem.

kazlas: If everything is working correctly, your Axim should respond right away. Do you have iLauncher installed? Do you have the beta version that fixed the lagging issue(I don't know if they have a new version yet...haven't kept up with it)? That fixed the lagging issue on my Axim. Right now, as soon as I press the on/off button, I can start tapping without any delay whatsoever.
