I appreciate that the wireless on the Dell is old technology so can not fully utilise the speed. Will taking turbo off reduce the speed of other connections, e.g. to my laptop?

The problem doesn't lie with the X51v.. but rather with the router. Turbo modes aren't a standard feature, different routers/nics use them differently. My Dlink causes horrible problems with a Belkin Network card, although it does work a bit better with my x50v. Most of the time the only solution was to reboot the router. The only think it works well with is a Dlink card for my laptop. WIth the Turbo mode turned off everything works much better
If you're conecting to the outside world you won't notice a difference, if your moving large files around on the internal network you might, but probably not.
Anyway, it's work a shot and should be really easy to try out. If it makes no difference then you can rule it out of the equation.
