I have the X51v. On the bottom of the screen, above the "contacts" word, is a tray with bluetooth icon and the wireless icon. How can I get rid of the tray to give myself more screen space?

What you need to do is remove the wifi and BT programs from your startup folder. I would recommend you save them somewhere else in case you want them again. But, once they have been removed from the /windows/startup folder, you can soft reset and the tray should be gone.
I can't remember the exact filenames, but I think it should be pretty obvious. If not, do a search here for "wifi tray startup" and "bluetooth tray startup".
Once you remove them and restart, you WILL regain the space that the tray used to take up. I did it myself for a while. However, you will not have easy access to the wifi/BT functions. In order to regain the wifi and BT, you will have to navigate to whereever you stored copies of the programs that were in startup and launch them from there. That will cause the tray to come back and you will see the icon for the program you just launched there.
I used to do this cause I hated giving up that much screen real estate just for 2 measly icons that I rarely used. However, I have since started using iLauncher and I use iLauncher to put a number of USEFUL icons in the tray, along with the wifi and BT icons, so I don't mind it as much.
You can still access the Bluetooth and WiFi through Start Menu > Settings > Connections.
I never use WiFi, and for Bluetooth, I use AEButton Plus to enable/disable it with a button, so I disabled both from that tray. I only have Magic Button, AE Button Plus, and FileDlgChgs in my startup.
