Question Is the X51v Finished production?

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything as to if the X51v will still be in Dell's line up for 2007 or not? Either as an upgraded version or otherwise.

There are rumors that Dell will halts the production of the Axim. You can search for this thread. Personally, I think companies are migrating the productions of PDA towards the PocketPC Phone Edition or the UMPC.

Again, needs to do things are the driving force to buying but you are right that thinking of the future support is very important.

I suggest that if you can wait it is better otherwise PDA market is unpredictable right now. Beside there are other alternatives to the Dell's though I always like Dell's products. I got the latitude and the Axim and the Desktop are all Dell's.

I like the Fujitsu Loox and thinking of buying the PE.

If you get a X51V be sure and get the full replacement service for two years. That way should something happen you can get something back from Dell.

I agree the PDA market is indeed unpredictable. Dell hestitates to align itself with a specific cellular carrier when it comes to producing a smartphone. Also, the smartphone market will be saturated at some point in the future considering the vast majority of cell phone users really only want a small dumb phone.

I personally don't think the UMPC will take off. It is too big to be truly portable and too small to be used as a "serious" computing device.

So, where does the PDA fall into all of this? Dell currently has the best PDA out on the market for the $$.

Perhaps not doing anything drastic at this point could be Dell's strategy for 2007...

Dell has already announced the cease of its PDA line of production. No more PDAs they say from Dell.

Yep... It makes a big difference. Either way, I'm not really surprised.

When has Dell announced ceasing production of the Axim line? This is news to me. The only rumor that I recall is Dell was closing an office in Taiwan that was related to portable device design. I recall it being just a rumor though.

No, they have not. This is a myth. There has been no announcement one way or another, official or otherwise, from Dell, and the Axims are still very much in production. All other information is strictly rumor.

There is nothing to back this up. Dell has made NO official statements on the Axim.

Lets try and keep with the facts people.

Dell has not extended it's contracts with the suppliers. They also stated that the X51 PDA model will be the latest in it's kind.

I bought my X51V less than a month ago and am now wondering if I should go ahead and buy the additional replacement service for a total of $123. Normally, I never take out the additional warranties on products, but this post has got me wondering what is the best thing to do. Especially if there are no more units produced in the near future.

I am open to suggestions and advice from you, the experts on this forum.

Thanks in advance for any advice you provide!

No, they have NOT. Again, Dell has not said anything of the sort. If they had, it would have been news. Any statements to the contrary are speculation and rumor, not backed by reliable sources. Dell has neither made an announcement, nor have they discontinued or declined to extend any contracts. As of right now, things are the same as they were four months ago, or four months before that.

Youre wrong, i have the memo send by Derrick Resco from the PDA engineering team in Ireland, I quote "Since we stopped all PDA development and are setting up the new umpc development team..."
