My plans are to install the x51 into my glove box sittin flush on a panel. My question is, can i get away with not using the side buttons (ie the volume buttons and the button above them)?
Basically, all that will be showing is the front panel of the pda. If this is possible please let me know. Thanks in advance.
You can configure all the buttons on the x51v to do whatever you want. Default for the side buttons is wireless on/off and record. The top switch is a lock.
Welcome to aximsite. I don't normally check the x50/x51 forums, but this topic caught my eye.
I'm not sure how it is on the x51, but the scroller on the side of the x3i is configured as follows:
scroll up = d-pad up
scroll down = d-pad down
push in = d-pad center
I would imagine any button on the x51 can be configured as any other button.
How are you connecting it to your vehicle? I'd assume the grom audio converter...
Post pictures when you're all done, I'd like to see that.
I'm gonna do a halfway hijacking now, but it might be of interest and that's why I mention it. :)
I'm half way, well maybe 3/4 of the way through adding a... we'll call it a media center, for lack of a better word, in my truck. I mounted my phone and the charging cord comes out right beneath it. I have a bluetooth headset, so I don't really need it in reach. But I'm going to be controlling music (from a computer) with my axim, so I wanted it right close to my hand. I finally mounted it so the axim is just off the end of the armrest. It's going to be wireless so I'll be able to take it out of the mount and send to someone in the back seat if they want to chose the music, or even if I'm outside my truck I can change the music. You can check out more here (a thread of my own discussing just this).
Good luck, I hope it turns out just the way you want it.

Well im still working it all out in my head. So far this is what im putting together.
axim x51v (in hand)
Holux Slim 240 Bluetooth GPS receiver (in hand)
VGA output cable with intergrated DC power supply and usb connection for sync with PC
i have a 7 inch xenarc touchscreen monitor i plan to control the axim with.
Audio will be supplied through the headphone jack into the aux input of my stock bose system (04 maxima)
Ratoc? CF usb host card
Usb hub (4 ports- one dedicated to the usb cable goin to 7 inch touchscreen)
maybe a bluetooth keyboard
One issue im tryin to figure out. I want to be able to step in my car turn the ignition, touchscreen automatically comes on, but will the axim do the same? can i configure to turn on when power is running from dc adapter?
anythin else im missing?
Future plans maybe a usb hard drive?
I plan to bondo the dell axim housing to a plastic panel and paint everything silver to match my exterior and complement my black interior.
Thanks for everyones input! I will get pics up when i complete the project.
See my post in the other thread. You can modify the charging connector, but it will take some soldering skills and a steady hand.
Aximsite member Emmtee posted a pinout on this post, this thread: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...919#post549919
HTH.
p.s. maybe not bondo the Ax itself; you could make a custom dock with a faceplate, and the Ax would still be removable, if only for maintenance purposes.
p.p.s. The X51 and X50 series have the same pinout.

I don't know where you live but you may want to make sure that if some one would break into your car they can't steal your pda once you have it installed. I know in some parts of the country they have had problems with non-factory installed equipment being stolen.

You are almost describing same setup I am already using.
First I built an adaptor with VGA+RS232+POWER+USB, you can see it here: http://www.evalfa.com/download/axim_adap.jpg.
The adaptor plus USB hub plus audio connector became too many thing hanging from PDA, difficult to hold and easy to damage.
It took me to build the Aximizer: it is a long thread, but you have links to all pictures posted in the thread at first post.
I built it during the summer and recently I did my first long trip of 1200Km. PDA+Aximizer remained inside the glove box all the time and it provided me following features:
Bluetooth GPS
Fast tap Bluetooth dialling.
Music
Movies (not for the driver of course)
Online car diagnostics.
My car setup:
X51V + Ratoc USB Host + Aximizer
Bluetooth GPS
Bluetooth Cell phone.
7” VGA TFT w/touchscreen
HD USB + Power inverter (12vDC to 220vAC 300w).
Car diagnostics OBD-II to RS232 adaptor.
USB and SD slots built at car front panel.
I am to record a video showing up all features during next weekend.
REMARKS:
Maybe you are also interested in my thread: CF USB host + USB touchscreen + eGalax driver... WORKS!!
If you want to run a Navigator and other program at a time (i.e.: Windows Media) you need a “magic button” utility and a Navigator able to minimize. The only one I found that behaves fine in mirror mode + landscape + minimize is Navigon Mobile Navigator.
Also take a look at all my threads, I think amost everything is oriented to have X51V as carputer.
You will find useful information about Ratoc.
Search also my posts and whole Aximsite for "car noise": it is a hard nut to crack.
Well im slowly putting everything together, thanks for all your input, it has been a tremendous help on this project.
To answer Pocketbrain - i purchased a crystal clear case which i will bondo to a 10 x 10 inch faceplate. the face plate will hav a key lock which will allow me to access behind it and remove the axim for portability.
rcab- ive already thought your concern out. My xenarc touchscreen monitor has been custom installed in my maxima by myself in the dash making it look OEM. To a thief the car will appear stock. The axim will be locked securely, first by the glove compartment and an additional lock on the face plate. The face plate willl be attached with a hinge inside the glovebox. In the event that i park in an unsafe area i can always remove the axim and take it home with me.
Afare- i have been looking through your threads. You inspired me to do this project as i was thinking of the carputer set up but liked the size and portability of the axim as a opposed to a mini desktop setup, your information made me aware of the possibility.
Current progress:
Currently looking for the Ratoc usb host (to be purchased-any recomendation on where to buy? i have seen it online for about 125 US dollars.)
I am currently looking for the navigation software that will work best.
Once again thanks, i will have pics up as soon as i have compiled everything i need.
X51V is powerful enough for playing back music while running a Navigator. To take full adavantage of this you need a Navigator able to minimize. I found only two with this feature: M|N5 and iGo, but iGo does not behaves well in landscape + mirror mode. If minimize is not important for you then you can have some more options. TomTom is not an option, it does not behaves well in landscape + mirror mode.
About power, I turn PDA manually on, I turn it off using a soft button.
I always use Nyditot in my car. Whit Nyditot you do not need to turn PDA display off each time you power on PDA. If you are to use Nyditot I can tell you best car setup & tricks.

For USA users, I've found that iGuidance works well with landscape + mirror mode. It doesn't switch to/from other applications very quickly, but it is usable. It's great being able to use a 8" touchscreen for GPS nav!
