Surely I have, but not before I did a few searches myself. The least I always do is browse through the last 30 threads to see if anyone has similar problems/questions (often the case!). As a matter of fact, the last time I had a problem I found one of my own old threads (through search)... about the same exact problem. Surely better than posting another thread, no?
There is no point treating all (new or old) members like babies. "Oh, you can't read by yourself? That's ok! We got 130,000 members over here who will do it for you!"
What do you think will happen when the person has a second question? Is he/she going to bother trying to find the answer by him/herself? No, the user will create another pointless thread on a topic which has been discussed a million times before. And then another one, and another one, and another one.
Throughout life we are supposed to learn; if not by reading a book, then by experiences. How did we learn to walk? By crawling and trying to walk ourselves. If our parents carried us 24/7 we wouldn't be walking now. It's not the perfect comparison, but it's close enough. If new members don't start learning how to use the forum from day 1, they never will. There's a reason threads (and posts) get archived, and it's not to take up database space.
If I see a new thread started by a person with 1 post (the thread) asking a question which has been asked a million times before, damn right I'm going to be harsh to them. There's a very good chance the person won't even post a reply after getting an answer. A damn good chance! Do these selfish leechers deserve an anwer to their question? No!
What angers me the most is when I see a post like "wat iz x and y? im too lzy 2 serch 4 myslf."

ban in my book. Too bad the world doesn't run by my book. (Make me the world Dictator? Pretty please?)
For every dumb fool on this board (which I'm thankful to say is not a very large percentage) there are 2 who are willing to babysit him. What I ask is
why? Don't you have anything better to do? I understand welcoming new members, sure, but not when the new member doesn't bother to show the least bit of respect to the community - in his/her very first post! The "newbie" doesn't respect you, why should you return respect? It's not like he/she will appreciate (or even notice!) it.
Now, I can't say that all of what I have described and mentioned applies to the OP of this thread, but the idea is the same. At least
c2c named the thread properly and wrote a decently asked question - not something I can say for many other threads...
This turned out to be a much longer rant than expected... Why can't my school essays be assigned on topics such as these?

That would surely simplify my life...
