I recently got an X51v to replace my x50v, and I've noticed a very bizarre problem.
When I allow my unit to power down on it's own (currently set to 3 minutes), it will frequently, but not consistently, fail to shut off the wireless as well. So even though the machine appears off in most respects, the little wireless LED will continue to flash.
The system will continue to draw power and I've had the battery almost completely drain itself because it was stuck in this state overnight. Also, if I try to power it on again with the power button, it fails to do anything. I end up having to soft-reset it for the machine to start working again.
I've had that problem since I can remember. It's inconsistent, too (which makes it real fun to troubleshoot). Also, I can't have wifi active when I cradle the device (if the cradle is connected to the USB port). Apparently, time as we know it stands still and the earth collapses. (Actually, the device will just usually lock up, requiring a reset.)
I've noticed this a few times, even when it's plugged into the auto. 12v adapter, and when I use the power button to turn it off.
Perhaps if we all listed our Today plugins, task managers, flash mem. cards, etc., we can find something in common. I'll post my config after I have some dinner. (priortities!)
As far as (active) today plugins, I have Pocket Plus. I also have the Executive Keyboard drivers installed. I have a whackload of other stuff installed, but it's mostly just silly stuff like games (Yay sudoku!) and whatnot, which don't start at bootup.
I suppose the best way to tell would be to do a hard reset, but I lothe having to reinstall all the stuff again.
The WiFi Staying on seems to be not only a problem of the Dells, I have a PPC-6600 with a wifi card and sometimes it does the same thing and doesnt turn off the wifi (which is quite funny considering that the device usially does not supply power to the SD slot while off) but anyways it is true that a hard reset might solve the problem.
I've been having the same problem. I just did a hard reset and reloaded by hand hoping to solve it. So far, so good. But, I haven't started using the wifi much.
It's annoying and embarassing to have Axim behave like this. I'll be in a meeting and pull it out to jot down a name/number or quick note and I have to reset because it won't power up. So while i wait 2-3 minutes for the Axim to reset, my coworkers giggle and tell me to just use a piece of paper... THAT IS NOT WHAT MY MACHINE SHOULD BE DOING!

I don't think it's related to specific software installed (it's happened to me after a hard reset) , I think it's a bug in the firmware/ROM. I've had both bluetooth and wifi stay on with the unit "off".
I've also had issue where I'll forget to first turn off the wifi and I'll press the power button to turn it "off" (suspend or whatever mode it is with the screen off). Then the following scenario usually happens.
The wifi light can be either on or off, but I can't turn the unit back on. It requires a rest button to get it back. If I leave it alone it will eventually drain the battery.
I have noticed that when you use the MSN the WiFi remain on all the time. so there must be other programs using the WiFi the same way msn does. if this happens to me I gust sign out and close Pocket MSN.
Yup same problem, seems like when msn messenger is running in the background it causes wifi to stay running for some reason, acts like a sleep mode where it stays connected for msn.
I think I might have found a solution to this problem. I've had my x51v for almost a year now. This problem did not crop up for me until recently. I also noticed that I was getting the battery door open message a lot recently. I applied the finger nail polish fix for the battery door problem, and both problems seem to have gone away.
You can search the forums battery door problem. Basically the prong on the battery door does not press the switch down far enough. To fix the problem, you have to make the door prong a little longer. There are several ways to do this. I used finger nail polish.
My theory is that the battery door open message pops up with the screen off. The axim is waiting for you to click the ok button, but you can't see it. So the axim is on (not standby) with the screen is off. The WiFi is also on and the axim runs it's battery down.
Too soon to be sure, but I was having both problems several times a day. Since putting on the nail polish, I've gone several days without the problems.

Although I haven't tried your solution yet, I suspect that that isn't the problem.
I just discovered some odd behaviour. I found that my unit had started doing that again so I did a soft-reset. Then I turned on the wifi and shut it off. The screen shuts off almost immediately, but it takes a couple seconds for the LED to stop flashing. But it does shut off.
So I turn it on again, and then use the wifi button to shut everything off (802.11 & bluetooth), and then hit the power button immediately after the "Disabling Wireless..." window is gone. When I turn the unit on again, the wifi turns back on!
I am able to replicate this inconsistently. I think the give-away is when the LED is still flashing at the end of the "Disabling Wireless" sequence. But I think there is definitely something kooky going on. I know someone said they would try hard-resetting their unit and see what happened. Has that worked?
I dont know if this relates, but I have the same problem with my X50v, the green wifi button's flashing in the sync cradel, and the unit is off --- but it wont power on untill I soft-reset it!
