I work on doing J1939/J1708 work at my job where we build vehicle monitoring software. I own an Axim PDA, and I even thought of buying an ELM adapter or something else. But I think the ELM uses ODBII, which is its own interface, so I am confused then if it can allow you direct access to the vehicle's bus. But I played with the concept of putting a smaller version of the software on the PDA just for fun, and I was thinking of GPS and such too but I am very glad to see someone actually take it all the way and I am jealous for my own car!
Still 1000 Euro that is major, at that point I am thinking I would use a cheap laptop or UMPC or maybe tablet PC with a DC-DC power supply. It would include the screen and support, but it wouldn't look as nice as this solution with the screen since you'd have to basically mount the entire computer somewhere (with laptop or maybe tablet PC perhaps you could mod it to break out the display and hide the CPU part).

I got €1000 by adding everything but it is not exactly right.
One of the major objectives for me was putting to work all USB devices already had. So I bought none.
Also, the screen is a lot of money, but compared with carputers it is a device you must always buy (you are right if you use a laptop or a tablet you save the screen).
Other devices like my audio input car stereo adaptor must be considered a particular implementation.
There are also other devices that must be considered prototype or development leaks.
Also, X51V nor Ratoc CF must be considered part of the project. I did not buy it to use as carputer. I already have them and I wanted to take advantage giving them one more use. Beacuse this is the the major objetive of this setup: TAKING ADVANTAGE OF WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE.
I you see it from this other point of view, my carputer setup is very cheap

I vote we banish afarre for showing us all this cool stuff that he has done to his axim that nobody else can do (not yet anyways). (just kidding). I have an Axim X51 (low) That has a defective digitizer. I was 3 days past warranty when I called them and they blew me off. I now use an HTC Wizard (love it) but I would like to put my axim back to work. My car (97 ford escort) has a crappy stereo face and I am probably going to replace it. Other then an fm radio, the axim would do everything I would need from a radio (well... no cds, but I might be able to deal without that) so I am thinking that an in dash tft woudl work. I am also thinking about one that mounts to the root and flips down, but I am having problems finding touch screen ones for less then $600 us. could you perhaps post a few links to some of the devices you have used? and maybe some links to others that you considered but changed your mind on?
Also, I have been keeping up with your "hacking the usb host" thread, but is there any progress? Anyone decide to donate a mobo so someone can test it? (hint hint)
Guys I'd bet my bottom dollar that there are ways to make this cheaper okay... -_-...what we are seeing here is an INCREDIBLE feat for a pocket pc--the only thing that I could think of that CANT connect to this thing, is a game controller or a mouse! (this isn't attacking anyone that thought the price was huge BTW I'm just trying to state this)
In other words, sure, the prototype cost him a lot of money but now that he has it, has done all the trial and error, and could probably size down on some stuff, the price probably wouldn't be as scary for another one.

May be you are referring to a unit with some extra features besides VGA screen. This is my screen, still costs what I paid for it: €275 ($352). It does not have anything else, it is not motorized either because I love horizontal orientation, motorized units cannot do that. Same site has this other unit witch includes motorization, radio and TV and costs €425 ($544), I like this unit a lot but I would not want to spent that money and I cannot play horizontal orientation with it.
You could probably get better prices at eBay.

GREAT JOB DUDE, YOU'RE MY HERO!
You are right, it can be done a lot cheaper, but it requires a high inversion just for plastic moulds and motherboard. I calculated I will start to make money after 250 or 300 units sold. I believe it is too much for an accessory valid for just one PDA model.

Hi,
I know there are all sorts of deals out there. If anyone is interested, I found a similar in-dash 7" monitor with vga and touchscreen for $228.00 USD. The shipping was $38.00 for FED-Ex or UPS (I can't recall), but it was rather quick and provided tracking info.....from China. Here it is from www.chinavasion.com. I got it to work just fine. The video is excellent.
This is the coolest thing EVER! Nice work and good job on the video!
