my x50v wont communicate with my laptop

just like the title says...i havent used my pda for the past 4 months,...now since school is in session again, i plan on using it. i turned it on and went through all the initial setup stuff, put it in the cradle, and plug in the USB into my laptop, and my laptop says that "A new device found, dell axim." it then wants to connect to the internet to download any available driver. so i let it do its thing, but there isnt any online downloads, and then it says "your device may not work properly." i lost all the CDs and stuff that came with my axim, and i cant find any drivers online.

this really sux, i cant transfer files, sync anythin, or anythin....

how do i fix this problem?

You MUST install ActiveSync BEFORE connectig the device.

When you plug the cradle and axim in to the usb before you load activesync, a device is added in the hardware manager and xp tries to find a driver for it. That will fail because there are no drivers for the axim. Active sync will not work if this device is present in the device manager.
Delete the axim device in the device manager, de-install ActiveSync, reboot the PC with the axim OUT of the cradle. Once the the PC is booted and you have re-installed and loaded activesync THEN put the axim in the cradle.
