Can the Dell X51v handle more than a 2.0G b type 2 CompFlash?

Hello to all.

I'm currently using a 2.0GB type2 compact flash card. I was curious if I was able to insert a card that has a greater capacity.

Say a 4.0 GB for example.

Dell advertises the specs at 2.0GB expandable, but is that max or nominal?

The owner's manual is somewhat vague on that subject.

Any advise?

Thanx

They should all work, WM has support for FAT32 thus all should be fine...

lots of possibilities out there. I have used mine with a 4gb CF and an 8 gb microdrive. The only problem with the microdrive is that it is very hard to get out once you have inserted it.

Search is your friend. There are several threads that talk about different drives and even relative merits of the speed and brand. There's even a fix to get the stubborn 8gb out. have fun.

EDIT: IT APPEARS THAT THE PROBLEMS I DESCRIBE BELOW WERE DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH MY AXIM AND NOT THE CF CARDS. PLEASE SEE POST #39 IN THIS THREAD FOR DETAILS.

My personal experience is that CF cards with a capacity greater than 2GB do not work well with either my X51v or my hx4705 iPAQ. Eventually files on these cards will either disappear entirely or will be replaced by folders with names containing junk characters which can't be renamed or deleted. In addition, if I try to copy a large (200-300MB) file such as a movie from my SD card to the CF card on the PPC invariably I will get an error message part-way through the transfer saying that there's not enough room on the CF card to complete the transfer. This happens with freshly formatted cards with their full storage capacity available.

I have tested several different brands of both 4- and 8GB CF cards and have the same problems with them all. It may be a week or two before the problems appear, but eventually they do. I have not seen similar problems with CF cards of 2GB or less capacity, or with SD cards of any capacity. The bottom line is that I simply don't trust 4GB or greater capacity CF cards with any valuable files in my PPCs. My current carry configuration for both my hx4705 and X51v is a 2GB CF card and a 4GB SD card in the PPC's slots and 2 additional 4GB SD cards in the PPC case's card slots.

This is my personal experience after considerable testing, YMMV.

Can't say that I have seen the problems that debary_fl has experienced. However, I do not do a lot read/write operations on the large CF cards.

Very interesting.....

Thanx to all that replied.

Debary,

Thanx for a very insightful input. I thought someone was going to state issues with CFs greater than 2 gigs.

But you're ok with 4gig SDs. Very interesting.

4GB - 8GB CFs cost quite a bit of $. I hate to spend the money on big cards and have issues in the field.

Anyone else? Other posts above stated not having issues with 4GB - 8GB CFs.

ThanX again :approve:

Yes, it appears to be a problem with the FAT becoming corrupted when a fair amount of read/write is done. I've tried various format options (backing up FAT, cluster size) and nothing helped in the long run.

Note that CF cards of 2GB or less are formatted FAT16 by default (at least all those I've used) while those above 2GB must use FAT32. During my testing I tried to find a way to partition larger CF cards into 2GB or less partitions so that I could see if formatting them as FAT16 made them stable and usable for me, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this, at least not that I could find.

I've used 4GB SD cards for quite a while now and have had no problems with them whatever. Brand doesn't seem to matter. I have several Transcend cards and several no-name SD cards bought from 4AllMemory and all work fine.

A few months ago I did have a chance to test an 8GB SD card, Samsung I think but could be wrong, for a few days. I had no problems with it in 2 iPAQs (H4150 and hx4705) and my X51v in the short time I got to play with it.

DeBary,

Thanx again,

For the hell of it, I went to your link "4allmemory", to compare prices. They were kind of on the high side.

You have to check out Newegg.com. Their prices blows everybody away.

For example, the Sandisk CF Ultra 2 2.0GB, 4allmemory wants $86.00, I got mine for $63.00.

The SDs,...forget about it .... Newegg.com was nearly 1/2 the price.

See for yourself.

ThanX again

i have a 4 gig sandisk cf card and have had absolutly no problems with it. and ive had it several months. i do several read/write cycles a day, with movies and music. i bet it depends on the cards and their manufactor. Sandisk always produces high quality products.

One of my 4GB CF cards is a Sandisk. It held it's data for about 2 weeks. One day I went to listen to some old-time radio SciFi shows I had on it and every file in that directory showed up as folders with junk-character names. I pulled it from the PPC and stuck in in my laptop's card reader. Same result - all files in that directory were corrupted.

If my problems were on just 1 PPC I wouldn't worry about it, but it's happening on 2 different ones. Good luck, I hope your CF card continues to give you good service.

I cannot confirm anything that DeBary is saying.

When I bought my Axim x51v in December 2005, I bought a 6GB microdrive that has been permanent addition to the PDA except for very brief moments.

I use my Axim with CF as a sort of iPod so I put all of my music on it. I also have all of my pictures on it and any time I take pics I upload them onto the CF. I also have a few programs that I have installed on it. I also use MobSync and synchronize work/personal files between home and work every single day. Whenever I go on plane trips I copy a 500MB OGM movie to watch on it. I would classify this as heavy usage of my CF drive. I have used this since the beginning, so it has been used under A01, A04 and A12 roms. In the last year of daily use I have not experienced a single corruption.

To add to the evidence, when I bought my PDA my friend decided to buy one with a CF microdrive from a different company (I think seagate? Mine is Hitachi). He has been using his Axim for only a couple months less than myself with a large microdrive and has not had any issues with corruption. He still has issues with CF dissapear and Wi-Fi crashes but I've been telling him to upgrade from A04 to A12, but he's been holding off on that -- otherwise no issues at all.

I understand that DeBary is knowledgable and has done a lot of research on this and that he is having problems, but I am surprised, and my guess is that this is not commonplace.

I use them for generic cards. They have generic 2GB CF cards for $49.99 and 4GB CF cards for $89.99. Their generic 4GB SD cards are $74.99.

Over the last 6 years I've used a lot of storage cards, and have never had a storage card, generic or otherwise, fail. This includes the over-2GB CF cards I talked about earlier. They work fine in my wife's and daughters' digital cameras, they just don't want to work for me in my PPCs.
