PocketDivxEncoder settings for x51v??

Hi All.

Hoping someone has experience using PocketDivxEncoder can maybe help a bit... It seems to be a nice program as I can make mpgs straight from the vob files from dvds I recorders on my panasonic DVD recorder. (Windows media encoder doesnt work properly with these- Only records the first 20 seconds or so for some reason).

I encoded a clip at the highest quality setting (199 and xvid output) at 640x480 and it plays great on my x51v!

There are so many encoding options, I am trying to figure out what is best... Are people using the default VHQ output (which i think uses FFMpeg format- read from the help file), or are people using the xvid format? I also notice you can select both vhq and xvid in advanced options which confuses me even more...

Are people checking the framerate box and using the 29 fps, or leaving that unchecked? Also are people encoding at 640x480 or using 320x240? Checking B-frames, or unchecked? Checking de-interlace or no?

Also noticed I cant seem to "cut clip" when working with a vob file. I guess maybe thats just a limitation when working with vob files as it seems to work when using mpg files? ( I did some testing and it does allow you to "cut clip" if you first copy the vob file to your computer! Nice!)

Any other options that are best? Thanks much for any help :-)

I use :-
Video Quality 33 542 kbps
Audio Quality 6 44kHz Stereo
Brigtness, Saturation, Contrast all 0%
Sound +36%
Output Dimensions 640 x 480
2 Pass Encoding
DE-interlace
VHQ
Frame Rate 15 fps
Audio Normalsation

These settings give excellent palyback on y X50v and a reasonable file size.Aa 1gb memory card will take a 3 hour 20 minute movie.

thanks much for the info. the one thing i notice is a bit strange is that when you look at the properties of one of the files windows gets the bitrate way off... like i encoded a clip at 2866 bitrate (quality of 199), but windows sees it at only 370kbs data rate... o 'well..

One question about your settings. When you set the bitrate at 542kbs, that itself dictates the file size right (that and the audio rate)? So when you back the frame rate down to 15 instead of say 29, that makes each frame sharper (containing more data), than if you had same bitrates at 29 fps? (IE- it spends the whole 542kbs on only 15 frames per second, so each frame gets more data than if you were spending the same 542kbs on 29 frames per second )?

Is that how it works? Thanks again!

I use 26 fps, fastest for my software choices, so fast action doesn't zitter. I use TCPMP player and full screen selection in player. I use newest divx encoder 6.25 and I use single pass, not duel pass! Picture on my x50v is similiar to a smaller lcd picture quality. Also I use Ogg Vorbis for all sound encoding, movies and music.

Want to let you all know, www.divx.com you can download divx player, divx encoder, and movie converter for free! They want you to buy super duper sw. but the free works fine. Also I found free music codec software, www.dbpoweramp.com. Codecs for any kind of music files, player, converter, cd writer sw, music collection play lists, all for free. Again they want you to buy super duper sw. but free works fine. I convert all my music to Ogg Vorbis. Plays great on TCPMP player and is small files!
