Hi all I've posted here a few times already. I just got the axim with wifi but I have no idea how to use it... I turn the wifi on and if I am outside I sometimes get up to like 8 available networks or whatever but I can't ever go online or send e-mail. Could someone go with me step by step either in chat or here like you're explaining it to a little kid because I'm totally lost. :)
Ok, first (and foremost), if these networks are not from your home and are not public (i.e. INTENDED for public use), it is illegal for you to access them for internet or email. Just because your neighbor is not smart enough to protect his network does not mean it is alright to access it.
Next, if you do have your own network to access, you need to know what type of security you have to be able to properly set up the Axim.
Sorry to jump your case, but I don't want you getting into trouble through lack of knowledge.

Technically its not Illegal yet, its a grey area. However morally its wrong.

I thought you could be charged with "theft of communications". On the other hand, if I'm sitting in my house, and my neighbor's Wi-Fi are trespassing onto my property and into my house -- I'm going to go ahead and welcome myself to that signal :D
Actually, it IS illegal. Although, appeals have been made, it is considered "theft of services" or "theft of utilities". Wardriving (or listening for open networks) is not illegal, but USE of the network is.

This argument doesn't work. You do not 'own' property rights with respect to the air waves. In the US, these rights are completely owned by the government.

That's not right man, you should sue them for trespassing . Who knows what interference his signal cause with your wireless phone. They should be thankful that you are a wonderful neighbor that instead of complaining of trespassing, you just make the most of it!
I don't know why some people are so uptight over this issue. Lighten up folks, being too serious can cause health problems.
Short form: Unless they're public hotspots, or ones you've paid for access to, you won't be able to do so - either because they're secured (which means you'd have to hack the WEP or WPA keys if you don't already have them), or because it's illegal to do so, which could mean fines or possible jail time depending on the state involved.
If it's a PUBLICALLY accessible hotspot, then you just connect to it (Windows Mobile will prompt you to connect to the network), and then you just click connect. If you need a WEP or WPA key and you know it (because you own the router, or because it's one you've gotten permission for or have paid for access to, like T-Mobile's hotspots), then it'll prompt you for a network key - enter it and then click "Connect".
umm guys
i thought we were gonna help confused ol' nef with checking his e-mail wirelessly
Is it a public place? Like your local coffee shop?
I am pretty new too... and have only played a little bit. But when I am at the local coffee shop or grocery store where they have free wifi... I push the wifi button twice as prompted. Then it enables then I click on the bars icon and press settings that shows me the options of wifi connections to choose from. Mine auto connects when I am at home or I can choose if I am at the coffee shop... seems to me it auto connects there too but I am at home now doing this as I type. I push ok & then the bar icon is all green. Then go to explorer or whatever program you use online and if you don't have a home page already set type in where you want to go & you should be there. If you can't connect then it is a secure network and you won't be able to without the password.

It'll show a list of available networks - you select the network you want (example: "STARBUCKS" or "FREE STORE NETWORK") and click Connect, as I pointed out. If it requires a WEP or other network key, it'll prompt you for that too. Once you've done that, it'll become a preferred network and will auto-connect in the future, as you've discovered.
see I did that..I was in the park and the network said nycwirelessnet or something and it connected... but during "locating page" it said page can not be found..none of them
thank you for the responses guys
