Mirror function

I've had my x51v for a year now and am still quite the greenhorn. I have researched the Dell site, read the manual cover to cover, and can find nothing on what the 'mirror' function is supposed to do. I thought it was supposed to let you see what is happening on your PPC via a desktop monitor, but I'm unable to activate it. Anyone able to help me out here?

With a special cable (available from Dell or numerous third party vendors) the x51v can be hooked up to an external monitor. The 'mirror' function turns on the display output to the external monitor.

Or even a LCD projector. I have been wanting to use that feature for running powerpoint in meetings and in my class. But I have not yet worn my wife down to the point where she says "fine...order it! I am tired of you bugging me!"
