Slight bump, X51 turns off

Unless I place the axim down very carefully, the back panel moves (I guess) causing the axim to shut down to prevent loss of data (ie it thinks I'm opening the back latch, and taking out the battery)
The back battery panel is not broken and the latch is right across to the right (when looking at the back of it)

Anyone have this problem or a good fix??

The back panel on my axim never moves, so I think that if you have checked the latch, then probably the latch is broken. To temporarily fix the problem, try using masking tape to secure the back panel. Make a backup using the built in program or any other, and ring Dell support tho try to get a replacement. If you do get a replacement, restore the backup that you made.

Read a suggestion to place a small piece of foam (anything soft, I guess) between the battery and the cover. I the idea was to create pressure to keep the cover firmly in place. Hope that helps. Lettuce no! :-)

Dear Aussie,

You have slammed into my #1 complaint about the quality of the Dell series of PDA's the moment I looked at mine. Compared to competitive units that were on the market (HP) the battery door situation looked like it was designed by a total cheap ass dork.

There is a safety switch hidden in there somewhere, and if the door is not pressing in securely your unit will shut down or not turn on. That battery door and latching system is built so cheaply it is the number 1 hazard that could cause a unit to fail. Bottom line, you've been tossing your unit around too hard, or careless during a battery swap, and you've damaged the little cheap ass tangs on the door that activates the safety switch or the latching mech. Or maybe the lousy grade of plastic of the door just failed.

this has been such a common problem that i'm suprized at the quality of responses here... first of all, aussie, if you're having a problem, please use the search feature of the forums, its there for a reason, and most, if not all, problems have been addressed, and a lot of them solved (at least once)... some don't have the determination to solve their problems, but... others do.

so unless you LIKE refurb units, don't bother sending it back to dell for *THIS* problem.

the latch clearly works (else you wouldn't be able to turn your unit on AT ALL) ... the problem is that the pegs on the battery latch door aren't large enough to properly trigger the "door closed" button at all times, so if it shifts, the button releases, and you end up with the "latch cover" problem. the best fix is to pad the door latch that has the button under it, so its properly depressed at all times. often, this takes no more than a few layers of tape. (a few mm).... to indicate to you the correct peg, just hold your battery door cover, inside facing you, with the pegs on the bottom side... the right peg is going to be the one with the button for the latch cover detect function. pad it either using tape, or if you're feeling frisky, nail polish does the job too. just make sure it dries properly... if it's not hard it'll goo everywhere and you'll end up having to "repaint" the piece for the fix to work...

:)

Thanks for the lecture Mr 36 posts boy. Don't really appreciate the sarcasm, and I'm sure neither do the guys who you're refering to "i'm suprized at the quality of responses here". Are you paying for server space here? ....But regardless

Yes, folded a peice of paper in half to put a bit more pressure on the "made in a sweat-shop" back panel......seems to have done the job.
Appreciate all the attitood-free help.:approve:

I too have used the "foam tape on the switch leg" solution. Haven't had a shut off since. I didn't want to trade an otherwise nicely functioning unit for a refurb to possibly fix the problem.
