Cleaning up the desktop
I am not going to hold my breathe on this one, but is there a way to clear the items off the "desktop" of the axim. ie: tasks,appts,messages and such?

You mean turn off the today screen plugins?

Start--->Settings-->Today-->Items

Uncheck whatever you want to.
