Please help - Suddenly can't get wifi to work

Hi, all - I've had my Axim x51v for about six months and have had no trouble getting it to connect to wifi here at home or in libraries, airports, etc. But this past week wifi just stopped working. I don't THINK I did anything out of the ordinary ... I had just transferred some files via Bluetooth, which I do once every week or so .... When I turn on wifi and go to 'Settings', I can see my home wireless network there, and the WLAN Utility says the signal strength is "Best" (although the wifi bars remain gray, not green), and the status line constantly says "Scanning network". The Ping function won't let me renew the IP, and the network info says 0.0.0.0. .... It's like everything's working, but it wont' read my wifi network (or any wifi network). The problem sounds a lot like this one from an August message:

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...sn%27t+connect

... but there's no resolution posted there. It looks like one of my neighbors might have set up a wireless network this past week - it's suddenly showing up in the list of available networks on the Axim, but not on my laptop computer.

Any ideas what the problem might be, and how I might troubleshoot and fix it?

Thanks very much for your help.

I have never heard of this happening. I assume you did a soft-restart and tried to rediscover any networks. I would also make sure you reset your wireless router.

Can you connect to any wireless, or just your home?

Happens to me all the time. Soft-reset will fix it.
It's just something else Dell/HTC has needed to fix for the longest time.

Yes, I've reset the wireless router at home. And I've done so many soft-resets of the Axim over the past few days that I can't even count them anymore. Neither of these remedies has gotten the Axim to latch onto my home wifi. My laptop has no problem with it, though (I'm using the laptop right now, in fact...).

check this: start>settings>connections tab>connections>look for "edit my proxy server" if is there click on it and only the This network connects to the internet box should be checked. also in connections check the Advanced tab and Select Networks and make sure both are set to My Work Network.

...and, as pointed out in the other thread you linked to, try changing the channel on the router. As I mentioned in that thread, PPCs seem to have more trouble with interferring signals so the fact that your laptop works doesn't mean that isn't the problem.

Same thing happened to me lately: x51v wifi unable to connect to my router or I will lose my existing connection. I suspect it's one of my neighbors signal that's interferring with my router. Everything's working fine now as I don't see the new ssid on my network list (maybe the broadcast has been turned off). Not sure if changing channels will help; neighbor's channel is different from my channel. But i'll give that a try if it happens again.

Thanks.

Remember that 1, 6, and 11 are non-overlapping. If you change the channel, be sure it is not within the same range of your neighbor's.

thanks blkalloon925. Mine is currently on channel 11. Cannot remember if the neighbor's channel is set at 6. I'll take note of it next time it is visible.

I can see that both my neighbors' and my networks are set to channel 6, but how do I change the channel?

(Would doing a hard reset correct this problem, do you think?)

no a hard reset won't help this. you need to read your book for your router and figure out how to change the channel. Your pda and PC should automatically follow the change as long as you don't change anything other than the channel.I wish everyone would learn how to do this. there are so many routers out there still set to the factory default. I am trying to get my neighborhood organized so that we can minimize the interference around us. Part of the area is two story townhouses and it looks like if we could get everyone to go with a plan so that the first house in the block is 1, second is 6 third is 11 then the next goes back to 1. I think that is enough seperation to make it work.
