The PSP has a fairly bright screen... but then again, so does the DS Lite. In the end, I'd have to say it depends on what you do with both - for games, it's no contest. The PSP is better than an Axim is at this; it has more horsepower, is optimized for playing games, and has better controls. However, as a movie watcher? The higher-rez Axim x51v screen's somewhat better for this, IMO, especially if you're not buying UMD movies (which themselves are becoming harder to find, due to other movie companies save Sony's abandoning the standard) but are encoding your own.
As an MP3 player, I'd rather use the Axim - the Sony has a perfectly servicable program for it, but I prefer PocketPlayer... which incidentally lets me use A2DP-capable BT headphones. As a web browser, the Sony PSP uses a version of Netfront... which is also available to me on my Axim x51v, but I find keying things in to be easier with the Axim, due to the touchscreen input as well as a variety of text entry SIPs, while the PSP resorts to 'navigate and click' interfaces. Plus, I can open up attachments in the Axim that the PSP probably can't take (PDF files, Word docs, etc).
PSP storage is limited to fairly expensive memory stick duo cards only. There is a micro drive available but this is expensive and has to bolt on outside of the unit.
Axim SD storage is cheaper and CF cards/micro drives can add even more internally. If you could burn data to PSP umd discs then the PSP would be way ahead , but you can`t and sony may never allow umd burning drives.
Round Score : PSP 6 , Axim 8
How much does adding memory cost and how much do you need to feel you have enough for your needs? I'd watch out for microdrives in general as they weigh heavily on the battery consumption. SD or CF cards can be found in the US (NewEgg.com for example) for roughly $15 per GB.
Could you elaborate on the specific lack of comfort you mention? I haven't noted any particular issues with it in landscape mode so I wondered.

I think I may be able to elaborate some, atleast per my experiences. I notice that when in landscape mode the colours dont appear properly. Let me explain, if I close my left eye and look at the axim, it is fine. If I keep it at that angle and then look at it with my right eye, some areas are harder to see, as if part of the screen isn't lit up properly. To see for yourself, play a game or look at a pic in landscape and change the viewing angle. You can't miss it, or maybe your eye's are to close together? heheh.
Even though I dont experience this when surfin the web or anything, it is uncomfortable when playing a game or watching a movie, particularly darker scenes.
This really is comparing apples and oranges. I happen to have both a PSP and a x51v. The PSP is the king of games, that's what it was meant for. The Axim is a PDA--games are an afterthought in its design.
In use? The PSP eats up my hour-long subway rides in what feels like a fraction of the time. The Axim is my alarm clock and calendar. While I would have to re-encode movies to watch them on the PSP (although you can watch iPod mp4 encoded videos), the screen on the PSP is a helluva lot better to look at. I tried to watch vidoes on the Axim but the narrow polarization hurt my eyes unless I was in that perfect .0001 degree viewing angle.

Hope that helps.
Remember, it is an LCD display, and LCD displays have an ideal viewing angle. In the case of a monitor or laptop, that viewing angle is straight ahead, however in the case of a PDA such as this, that ideal point is from slightly above. The reason is that that is the natural angle if held in your hand.
When viewing a movie in landscape mode, I compensate for this by looking at it with the buttons slightly further away from my face than the power button.
