The reason is that that is the natural angle if held in your hand.
When viewing a movie in landscape mode, I compensate for this by looking at it with the buttons slightly further away from my face than the power button.

Yep, same problem I have and same solution.
Though if you're at home or someplace with a TV, it would be more entertaining to just hook up the presentation cable and watch the movies on a TV lol.
and I agree, every device has 1 main use and some sub-uses, normally it does 1 thing good and a lot of things crappy. PSP is an excent example of that, where is clearly plays games well and does a lot of other stuff crappy (cant say from experiance, though; I've never touched a PSP)
The problem is that when you break it all down again, you got your Axim, a PSP/DS/whatever, an MP3 player and possibly even a portable DVD player all in one bag! I'm happy with less-impressive games (the arvale series is keeping me entertained fine, and when I tire of that I pull up morphgear), slightly awkward viewing angles for movies (5 movies, 1 SD card, 3 cards, cant beat that), and shorter MP3 times (I got 5-8 hours dep on how often I changed songs and if I turned off the screen entirely) and having 1 device, though I'll probably be buying a second battery... maybe even a 3rd if I start traveling a lot...
