X51v Refuses to Hard Reset

ok so this totally perplexes me. i was updating a friend's x51v from A06 to A12 on my computer. i had hard reset his pocket pc and entered his 'owner name'. then i connected the x51v to the computer....connected with activesync under 'guest'... etc.

then i ran the update utility from dell to upgrade to A12. everything was fine until it told me to hard reset. when i pushed the power button and reset button simultaneously, the prompt screen (push 'contacts' button to confirm hard reset...etc) shows up for HALF a second, then disappears as though i pushed the 'mail' button (to cancel hard reset and induce a soft reset).

i just tried this a bunch of times, even repeatedly tapping the contacts button after pushing the reset+power buttons in the hopes that i'll interrupt the 'cancel hard reset' process, whatever that is. it DOESN'T work.

i've checked to make sure that the buttons are all working and the mail button is not jammed. after the soft reset, it's obvious the hard reset didn't work, cuz my friend's name is still in the 'owner name' thing and the rom is still A06.

i am confused... any help please???

Can you do the update under "guest?" I didn't think you could do that. You might try establishing a true partnership (just don't sync anything), then install the ROM update that way.

Anyone solve this problem? I've read several related threads & no solutions... The "confirm hard reset" screen appears for only a fraction of a second and then the system soft-resets. No matter what, I cannot get this to hard reset... I am stuck at A06 trying to get to A12.

Any advice appreciated!

The hard reset you are stuck at is a fake hard reset, and is only part of the upgrade to A12.

Step-by-step:
1. Run update utility, letting it upload files to your device.
2. You will be prompted to hard reset, but when you do it will simply rush through it without allowing you to do the hard reset, this is normal. Leave the Axim in the cradle and do not close the update utility.
3. When your Axim has reset and reconnected to Activesync an option should appear in the Update utility to "Continue." Click it.
4. The true update will now happen, along with a proper hard reset
5. You should now be at A12.

I've seen some people report problems with the update when their cradle is connected to a Hub, if you can connect it directly to a USB port on your PC then do so.

Hi, this problems same to me when I want to update from A01 to A12. Mokubai, I don't have option to use direct USB port but cradle only (worst case I guess). Is there's another way to do?
