Good bit of detective work, all! I was noticing this myself the other day when I was in the same room with my Netgear router and wondering what was up with the signal strength/quality!

The last I heard from them was on the 9th with the note below...
"The issue here is that with the latest ROM for your device (A12) Dell has changed the way that the WLAN reports its signal strength. This required a recalibration within our software to resolve. This has been done and I expect a new release by next week. When I receive it I will make it available to you.
A week?? it's been over 2 weeks now. I've made additional inquiries, but it looks as if their communications have ceased with me lol. It's becoming a tiring issue. Maybe they took Lars advice and have decided to maybe contact and work with Dell on the issue however in their note above they state they found a fix. if so where is it??
On edit... I can't seem to get much info from the socketcom forum either. I have sent the forum admin a message to which there has been no reply as well. He basically said the same thing as above from their tech support.
since I received the above from Socketcom on 1-9-07 and the fact that it's been over 3 weeks I sent an inquiry. The same person responded saying they are working on it?? His note above stated it had been done and patch was forthcoming. So I guess it's anybody's guess at this point? Just sit and wait I reckon. I'd just like accurate info when I inquire is all.:) They've known for 6 months I really don't understand why the delay and conflicting repsonses?
As of today I have not heard any more since I was told by Socket 1-9-07 the patch was done and would be out the following week.
I did post in the related thread on the socket forum that i was not a happy camper and that I didn't mid the wait, but was frustrated by being given false information. I had asked the forum admin for an update and another product question and it went unanswered. I didn't think they monitored their forum as the thread contained porn spam that I had reported. I was wrong as my post expressing my concerns over being given false info and no further contact and my opinion on the matter was promptly removed. You know , can't have anything negative there lol. I based all my info on what was told to me by Socket employees and asked they put a disclaimer on their sales site reflecting WFC was not fully compatible with the X51v with A!2 ROM. I told them it was misleading to customers. I guess they didn't like that, but it's true since they've known about this for at least 6 months and continue to sell the software to X51v A12 custmers with no mention of this.. Oh well.
I've tried guys. Guess we'll have to wait and see if they come out with the patch or at least a disclaimer for those who have these units.
This will be my last post on the matter until and if I hear the patch has been released.
Well there has been nothing from Socket since back in January as you'll see below. The part that has me angry is one person tells you one thing and another something different. I even wrote their corporate sales and asked them to correct their matrix to read "Compatible with issues" as they have done on other items such as their Compact Flash WLAN Card. They known about all this at least 7 months that I know of, acknowledged it and even stated a patch had been done on 1-9-07 and said the patch was forthcoming the following week. It just irritates me that a company like Socket would mislead, not communicate with and ignore their customers and concerns. When you go to buy something and it's not compatible with your specific device it should be noted so on their compatibility matrix. They've done nothing to correct this and continue to see a product to unsuspecting X51x A12 customers.
I posted my concerns in their own forum and the post was not out of line and just contained the facts and it was removed!? You draw your own conclusions. It's not the $25, it did not break my bank however I feel it is wrong to do what they are doing. It shows me Socket does not care about their customers in my opinion. Kinda like take their money and run, especially since this has been hashed out over and over. right is right and wrong is wrong. I've tried folks to no avail and I have written them one last time. The letter is below.....
Guys. when is the patch going to come out for the Dell Axim X51V with the A12 ROM??? The issue has been known since at least August of last year. It was even acknowledged by your own forum Admin. I started a ticket on this back in January. I received the below responce from Socket. Jan 9th 07! It has now been almost 3 months!!!
Hello Anthony, The issue here is that with the latest ROM for your device (A12) Dell has changed the way that the WLAN reports its signal strength. This required a recalibration within our software to resolve. This has been done and I expect a new release by next week. When I receive it I will make it available to you. Best Regards, Andrew Hersh Development Services Socket Communications Inc.
The above message was followed by another contradicting note and blaming the delay on your recent move. Totally contradictory to the reply of Jan. 9th This is getting very old and the bad part is your own compatibility matrix shows WFC compatible with my device when in fact it is not and your matrix should read compatible with "issues". Yes I am upset to say the least, especially after being given a line of garbage (lie) (see above). Your sales page and matrix are misleading, misrepresentation of your product AND in my opinion false advertisement. I read your matrix, paid for the product in good faith only to to receive a product that is NOT compatible with my device as you state. I have even written your corporate sales department requesting the matrix be changed and quit misleading your customers and that has not been done as well. To put if quite frankly you are ripping off many of your customers and responding with misinformation. Truthful and faithful communication goes a long way with your customers and public relations. So far you have failed in this area badly. We are sincerely disappointed in Socket Communication regarding this issue. Hopefully it will be resolved soon other wise we will pursue it though alternate channels. Regards, Anthony Cornett
Just an update as the saga continues lol..........
I received the following response from socket to the above "letter" I sent them...
Hello,
I apologize for the frustration you've endured. We are still working on this issue but the priority dropped due to another urgent matter with another product. I will write our engineering department and request that the fix be expedited ASAP.
Please check back for an update later this week.
Best regards,

My reply...
Thanks for the reply. Hopefully something will be done soon. In the meantime the compatibility matrix for WFC and the Dell Axim X51v with the A12 ROM needs to be changed To read "compatible with issues" and explain those issues. You continue to sell a product that does NOT work properly as advertised to unsuspecting buyers. This is nothing more than deception and outright false advertisement especially since the issue has been known for nearly a year!? I've been dealing with this issue alone for 3 months myself. I'm not quite sure what to believe since I've been told already once 3 months ago the problem had been corrected and the patch was forthcoming and since I've been told 2 different stories. The very least you folks could do is let your customers know about issues with your products BEFORE they buy it. Anthony Cornett
Sockets last reply today...
I'll have a note added to the compatibility matrix to address the issue. I believe there is a fix pending from our engineering group but it hasn't been finalized as of yet.
I completely agree that we should mention this on our matrix so I will escalate the issue. Hopefully the fix will be released sooner than later.
Sorry for the run around you've been getting on this problem. Feel free to check back for an update.
Best regards,
Mario

No sooner had I made my post above I was contacted by Socketcom to test the patch for WFC and the X51v's with the A12 ROM! Well I tested it and found just a couple small issues so it should be ready any day. Signal strength will be reported in the following increments. 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. Fine granular signal strength cannot be reported due to the way Dell has programmed the WLAN with the A12 ROM.
With the test patch I finally got 100% signal strength sitting near my router where before the highest it would read was 61% period. I did an outdoor distance and signal strength testing which was great , with a few small issues to resolve. I sent in the report and I feel within a day or two we'll have the final patch I hope!
Looks like all my persistence paid off! Phew!! I'll advise when the patch is complete and available with the link and details.
Excellent work, Tony! You deserve a gold star for your efforts!:approve::approve::approve:

Having just opened the WFC case, I believe I will wait for the patch before installing. Sounds like you took a lot of time to get this fixed - thanx.
it won't hurt to install what you have, it just won't work quite like it should, but will give you and idea of how the program works and help you get used to it.
The "patch" I received to field test was actually a full install (CAB file) which required removal of WFC before installing followed by a soft reset. So for what I've been referring to as a "Patch" may be a whole new install for the X51v A12 owners. We'll see.
Yes it's been a grueling 3 months dealing with this issue, but I must give accolades to Mario from Socket Communications as I'm sure he's taken some heat over my persistence lol. I hope to hear more today and I sent my field test results to them last night. Only some minor adjustments from what I could find after a pretty intense field test. Hang in there it won't be long now!:)
Socket acknowledged my field test results of the patch I sent last night and they advised engineering would look at it and I should hear something soon. Looks like the wait for us X51v A12 owners is nearly over.:) of the things I noted I wouldn't think it would take long to finish and fix.
