Hi, I am about to purchase an Axim and I am wondering which is the best route to go. Should I get the 624 vs the 520? Is the speed and memory difference worth the $170 CAD price difference? Should I get the extended warranty? Are these units fairly relaible? I will primarily use the unit to refer to word/pdf documents while away from office. I may use it for movies and games but most of the time I will have my XPS laptop for that. In regards to accessories which are the must haves? Rhino cases, extra batteries?
Has anyone had any issues in buying them off of ebay vs Dell in reagrds to warranty?
Hi, I am about to purchase an Axim and I am wondering which is the best route to go. Should I get the 624 vs the 520? I would get the 624 for the VGA screen Is the speed and memory difference worth the $170 CAD price difference? Yes it does to me but it is my preference. Should I get the extended warranty? Nope, it something is wrong it will go bad the very first month if not the first week. Are these units fairly relaible? I would say yes they are I will primarily use the unit to refer to word/pdf documents while away from office. I may use it for movies and games but most of the time I will have my XPS laptop for that. In regards to accessories which are the must haves? Good case leather or Magnesium pick a flip up cover it is better than the book style opening , Memory card as big as you can afford Rhino cases, extra batteries?
Has anyone had any issues in buying them off of ebay vs Dell in reagrds to warranty? Go for Dell I do not know about Ebay
Any input will be greatly appeciated.

I have found my Axim very unstable and unreliable (since new, a year ago). If you're using it for business be prepared for meetings to be hanging on your every word while you complete a soft reset. Dell support is nil.
To be fair, from most of the posts on these forums I am in a minority (Albeit a fairly large minority), but you should be aware of the possible downside
I would definitely go for the V, the screen is worth it. If the screen is not that important to you, there may be other devices that would work better - even some of the new converged devices such as the cingular 8125 or 8525.
I've been very tempted to buy the X51v myself, but there are so many problems documented in this forum, with people having to get replacement units and even replacements of their replacements. I've decided I wouldn't buy one unless it came with Dell warranty and I was willing to pay Dell for an extended warranty. All of this makes the overall cost pretty high.
Don't hesitate--I got mine this past summer and it works fine. It has little peculiarities once in a while, but nothing that a soft reset or a little advice from the good people here can't resolve. Day-to-day it is solid and a tremendous help in so many tasks. I had high expectations for my Axim, and it has far exceeded them.
only problems i have with my x51v is the false battery latch errors(#1 now) ,and there's also screen corruption that will occur if u goto the wrong site in PIE(often hard to tell what the wrong site is). and i don't have any freezing unless i run old software or gave the batteryn latch error while its cradled.
In my opinion x51v is a great way to go - better screen - especially if you watch movies.
That said my wife has a x51 and loves it - though I use mine for work and movies - much more than she.
If you don't know about the better screen you won't miss it as much. But that said I like the v.
I have purchased the 3 yr warranty - for $40 / I forgot exact price - a year- for me it is cheap insurance.
Over the last 6 months with the many upgrades to the operating system and to the many software programs I use, my x51v is finally running great.
I would highly recommend buying a backup program - SPB back-up, this will save you lots of time - especially when trying new software. Also Ilauncher, Resco Explorer, are must have programs. Also I use the 2200 battery with a Sena case - best around. Good Luck.
About 15 months ago I bought an X50v NIB on Ebay with a two year transferable warranty and two batteries for $320. That having been said, if you find a good seller on Ebay you can have your cake and eat it too -- the X51v at the cost of the X51. If I was looking for a Pocket PC today I'd do it again right now. Currently the X51v is selling on Ebay for about $300 + $30 for shipping. At Dell the same is $499 + shipping. I know you can get Dell coupons, but not for $200.
BTW, regarding post #4, my X50v died, most likely because I was running WM5 on it . Dell honored the warranty and replaced it with an X51v. Other than the X50v/WM5 issue, I have no complaints. I use it for business, navigation, study, practically everything. Like I said, I'd do it again.

Yes, get the V. Otherwise go for iPaq as they are more stable, in my experience. Although I had the 2215 which is a WM03 device, the iPaqs with WM5 may be just as bad as Axim.
I've had mine for a couple of months now and here are some random thoughts:
- The screen is beautiful, although it does get corrupted every now and than.
- It has a nice form factor but the stylus is too small for my hands.
- You must get an extended battery if you plan to use it heavily. A 2200 mAh with an aluminum case cost me $35 with shipping. I don't use the case, though, as it's a bit bulky. It does fit nicely into a stock case that came with the unit. With a larger battery the unit actually feels nicer to hold.
- I experience a fair amount of soft and hard resets, however I think most of them can be attributed to my experimenting with software & screwing up settings in the process. If I stop doing that and just use it I think it's as reliable as it can be (WM5 is not as solid as WM2003).
- Some applications, most noticeably Pocket Informant, sadly run slower, esp. on startup. This is again WM5 issue, imho. Other than that the unit speed is OK.
Overall, I think there's not much choice left here in the US, if you want a WM5 machine with a true VGA display Axim X51v is hard to beat in price and specs. I really liked iPaqs but they don't have much to offer anymore. If you don't care for VGA (which I like more and more every day) then I'd look at an iPaq.
