THIS IS HOW I HAVE FOUND SUCCESS IN SETTING UP A STABLE AND FAST X51v
I am not an expert but I have kept a list of useful information for setting up my X51v because over the last month and a half I have hard reset the thing perhaps 9 times!!! (mostly due to my own experimentation but also due to trying to stop all crash issues and find a workable backup solution). Much thanks to helpful people on this site. So for the new person to the X51v I am providing my list for successful setup of a X51v that is fast and relatively problem free:
1. To improve Bluetooth Functioning, Load the Widcom Stack, as explained here
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...t=Widcom+Stack
2. To improve the file menu functioning, Load gsgetfile and filedlgchg to the Windows Directory (found here
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconVa...sgetfile-i.zip and here
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconVa...filedlgchg.zip
3. To cut out most of the crash and freeze issues, do the Fake Server Trick as explained here
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=112638 ; and If you have a weather program, set synchronization to manual ( this stops conflicts and freeze ups if you set up a Bluetooth modem, otherwise it is not necessary)
4. Use a registry editor to add the following tweak, or use SK Tools or Tweaks2k2 to enable a similar tweak(s) to boost your speed of your machine:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Cac heSize=0x1000(4096)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Ena bleCache=0x1(1)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize=0x1000(4096)
5. Set up your wifi to get high speed wireless internet as explained here
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=86191
6. Setup a Bluetooth Modem for dial up web access through your cell phone as explained here
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=61826
7. Load it up with programs that work with WM5 and a list of programs that play nice with WM5 is found here
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=98578 and a list of free but not necessarily WM5 compatible programs is found here
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=128278 . By dumping programs that were not on the compatability list, crashes reduced (whatd'ayaknow).
8. Set up Bluetooth services most Bluetooth services set up procedures are explained here
http://www.aximsite.com/bluetooth. Synchronization with WM5 is not explained very well so I will summarize what I have learned about synchronization here just incase, like me, you do not find what you need from this link.
BLUETOOTH SYNCRONIZATION
This is the holey grail of the setup processes. Some people will mysteriously get it while others seemingly inexplicably will not. First, be sure you are using Win XP with SP2 loaded. If not, forget about the rest because that is what I am using.
If your dongle uses the built-in XP Bluetooth Stack then this tutorial should help:
http://axim.dpicts.com/
If your dongle uses the Widcom Bluetooth Stack (Linksys, Belkin etc.) then you first need to install the software and you need to follow the instructions that come with the software but basically the process is like this: be sure that if you right click the BT icon in the tray you see a menu with the “Explore my Bluetooth Places” option present. If it is then all went well with your install, if you see two icons in the tray, something went wrong. Stop and uninstall. Do over. If installed properly and the dongle is in place then
a. Right click BT icon in the tray on the PC, select “Explore My Bluetooth Places”, in the left panel select “My Bluetooth Services”, Select the ActiveSync icon, Select Properties, look at the comport and note which com port is available. In my case it is 8. Note this number.
b. Check/Select the comport for active sync. Right click the AS tray Icon, select “Connection Settings” from the menu, check “Allow Connections to one of the following” in the drop down box select a comport that matches the port found in MyBluetoothPlaces/MyActiveSync. Ports 1-10 are ok, ports 11 and above will not work. My drop down box shows a selection of 3 or 8. I chose 8 to match the setting in MyBluetoothPlaces/MyActiveSync.
c. On the PDA click the BT icon on the tray, select connection manager, and hit new. Select “ActiveSync via Bluetooth, next, next, next, Select your computer from the list, hit finish.
d. A bubble will pop asking you to authorize your PDA. Click the bubble. Click “Always allow this device to access this service, click ok. AS may startup at that time. If so, you are done. If not, there is a problem with the com ports so do letters a-c again.
This does the trick for most, if not for you, there are two other options that I have tried and have worked:
a. Remove the Widcom Drivers from the PC and using the XP drivers instead (disadvantage is that you loose several features of the Widcom package, but it works)

b. (My Favorite) Join a personal area network prior to starting BT ActiveSync:

In addition:
Firewall problems will probably need to be snooped out and the AS4.2 trouble shooter will guide you through this mess. Be sure that you are only running one firewall. For some reason accidentally activated the Windows XP Firewall and it was operating concurrently with my McAffee firewall. Lots of problems started surfacing. I turned it off and all was well.
Also USB problems can be expected. This is why there is an option in Start>Settings>Connections for USB to PC, If you have USB problems try ticking or un-ticking this option. It has helped me.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
I am now trying to find a good backup solution for the X51v. I have all the popular backup programs and am not satisfied with any of them because they all fail with a password protected device. All are somewhat successful if the device is not password protected. I will add that here when I find a truly dependable solution.
Final point:
I run my Ax at maximum speed with the screen brightness about 50% as my regular setup. I have tried using the Auto function and have found that Calligrapher starts to have errors with it that I do not see when the program is running at 624 Hz. I find Calligrapher to be much more accurate on the X51v than it was on my X30 High. If you find some things sticking now and then, try just running at high speed and see what happens.
I hope this is helpful to some who do not know where to start.
