I'm ready to replace my iPaq 4155. Because I have had only iPaqs (this is my 3rd one) I was about to take the plunge and get the hx2790, until I found out about the x51's VGA screen, and how much better it is supposed to be. I'm not much into games, but I am into graphics, photoshop, and multimedia. I also have a Garmin GPS10, which is a bluetooth receiver, and includes maps and software for the PPC.
I'm wondering if there are any "gotchas" relating to the VGA display and software compatibility. I'd also like to know how the visibility is in direct sunlight. Does anyone know where there is a photo of both displays side by side? Could someone please tell me why you prefer the x51 to the HP model, other than the display.
The hx2790 is a nice machine but any of the higher-end Axims will perform as well or better, especially for the $. I can't speak for the VGA as I have the X50/520 - but as for the quality of the unit I'll definitely vouch for the Dell. I've had this unit for 2 years and it's still in nearly new condition. You'd like that HP fine, too ... but an Axim with similar capabilities can be had for a lot less money.
The 4155 is a real nice machine. It has a good display and the size is very nice. A new Axim might or might not be faster, since WM5 has some issues with speed. Most people don't seem to have a problem with software compatibility with the VGA screen, unless you want to switch it to true VGA mode.
I currently have an Axim X5, and I bought my daughter an h4155 for Christmas. My only experience with a newer Axim is playing with one at the mall. I didn't see that the screen was that much better than the h4155, at least not at first glance. It might be better for viewing movies, and I'm hoping it will give more options for internet browsing. I've been a bit scared by all of the hardware problems posted here for the X50v/X51v. I think if a person was going to buy one it would be good to get one that still has warranty, and even buy an extended warranty.
You might also consider the HP hx4700, which is similar to the X51v in features including a VGA screen.
I looked at HP and Dell when I was shopping for my pda last summer. When I saw the vga screen on the x51v at the Dell kiosk, it won me over. I like it more and more every day
I have HP iPAQ 4150 and Dell x51v ( and few others).
I like my old 4150. I have been using it every day since 2004 and still very happy with it. It is very reliable and fast. One year ago I got Axim x51v because was amazed by it's VGA screen. Also it has WM5. I was very pleased with the screen and some nice WM5 features, but HP 4150 is mach faster. I understand that it is because it has WM 2003.
Also I like 4150 design - it is very slim and looks nice. Dell is a little big bigger, but still has a very good design.
The battery (standard) life for both PPC's is not vey impressive. I went for extended batteries for both devices.
I left HP 4150 for my X51V almost two years ago. I left for the screen, the larger capacity memory, ROM upgrade possible, and the ROM storage of its OS and all of my data files. Meaning I can remove the battery and my OS and data stays intact (for what ever period of time I wish). Another plus I found out later were the SD & CF memory slots. I currently have a 8gb CF and 4gb SD card installed. For me my X51V is first a Pocket PC (excel, word etc.) then a PDA (calendar, contacts, memos, todos) and then a video entertainment device (videos, pictures, pdas).

Hi, can you say from left to right the model #'s of those devices. I like the iPaq on the left with the keypad. Thanks

From left:
1. HP iPAQ 6515 - WM2003 SE, GSM phone, 1.3 camera, SD and miniSD slots, GPS, BT. Cons - no WiFi, square screen (240x240), slow processor. The lack of WiFi was solved by bying WiFi SD card which works perfect. If you are interested - the newer WM5 model is available 6915. It looks the same, but has WiFi, faster processor, no SD slot unfortunately.
2. Dell Axim x51v
3. HP iPAQ 4150
4. HP iPAQ 4350 - the same specs as 4150, but has buildin keyboard and bigger standard battery - 1650mah.
It's dissapointing. That screenshot does not show the axim in TrueVGA mode, that would give a major demonstration of it's resolution capabilities.
Also, unlike (any?) of the IPAQs, the Axim has a dedicated Video processor and can give VGA-output, which means throw in a travel mouse/kb and you have a pocketable desktop! Also, of course, good for Movies, or, more professionally, slide-shows/demos.
