I'm happy with WM5-A02 on x50v
I like WM5-A02 on my x50v. Here's my thoughts about speed - I'm not sure my "facts" are quite right because I'm writing this from memory of what I've been reading lately, and I'm not a professional IT person.
* Data stored in RAM (e.g., WM2003SE) is more quickly accessible than data stored in ROM (WM5).
* Data stored in ROM (e.g., WM5) is slower to access because it must either be loaded into RAM before being read (e.g., x51v - NAND device), or executed in place (XIP) from within ROM via RAM (e.g., x50v NOR device).
* Therefore . . .
- x50v on WM5 will never be quite as quick as x50v on WM2003SE
- x51v, which has twice the ROM as x50v, and can store more data than x50v (without cards), but may actually be slightly slower than x50v because x50v can XIP the data, while x51v cannot.
I like WM5 more than WM2003SE primarily because of persistent storage (I no longer have to be nervously aware of the closest power source), and because of the various additional features Pocket Informant offers within WM5 that didn't seem to be available in WM2003SE (don't ask me specifics, I no longer remember). WiFi connects faster, and IE browser quicker. Also, A2DP is available out-of-the-box for my stereo headset with WM5A02. Before I had only volume control after applying major hacks.
So, I'm quite content with a slightly slower AXIM. My CPU is not stuck on high speed (except when connected to AC, which is normal). My battery life is at least equal to what it was on WM2003SE. With all programs loaded to "device" I still have 24+ megs of RAM available when nothing is running. (The WidComm BT hack linked to from other threads on this site is a real memory hog on A02. I tried it, and then took it off.)
I can understand why gamers like WM2003SE - it's fast. I'm not a gamer. If you're curious about what software I'm running, see "View MyPDA."
I like WM5 A02 on my x50v.
Thanks for listening.
