As many of you know by now, from my previous posts. I'm still waiting for my Axim to arrive. I've been pouring through these posts daily and see that the extended warranty is a good idea. I also know that its easy to get a slanted view from forums like this, because you are primarily hearing about problems rather than successes. So a new poll for newbies like me, that will get us mentally prepared for what we are likely to expect when it arrives.
Enjoy your new toy :approve: My advice is to not load a ton of programs right off the bat. Only install the things you (think) you will use on a regular basis.

Billstein, you might want to be a bit more specific on your poll. You've posted in the general X50/X51 forums, so your poll results would include X50s running WM2003SE (or WM5 if acquired used) or X51s running WM5 - totally different animals! ;) (If you need help editing, PM one of the mods/admins.)
don't get too attached to what you install at first, install lost of free stuff to find apps you need/like.
Do hard resets to clean up the machine, add back your current favorite apps, try out new apps.
repeat
eventually try trial versions of apps that preform functions similar to your favorite apps.
hard reset and experiment/research some more.
Basically take a few weeks to discover the apps that you like, that apps that you want to pay for, and don't get too concerned with choosing right at first.
a hard reset will put it right back to factory in only a few seconds and apps can be re-installed through activesync pretty easily.

Good idea. I edited the post but couldn't figure out how to edit the poll. Hopefully that will help.
First, read the manual that comes with your unit.
Second, read the manual that comes with your unit and try every feature they describe.
Third, read as much of the information on this site about your unit as you can find. Most points of interest you will find posted here in a thread with lots of people making additional comments.
Fourth, be sure and as any questions you have that remain after points 1, 2, and 3 on this site. My experience here has been that the people at this site are willing to tell of their experiences and give their advice based upon their experiences.
Welcome to the site and you will enjoy your unit, its a great PDA, the best one I have since getting my first Palm Pilot years ago.

I'm also switching from the Palm platform. I started with the original 1 Mb Palm pilot that took two AA batteries. Then a Handspring Edge, followed by a Tungsten T, now I'm using the T3. Honestly, I don't see how the Axim can be any worse then the Palm platform. Two out of the four PDA's ended up having digitizer problems. On the T3 I now have to guess where to hit the screen, I just know its somewhere below where I should be hitting. I am constantly doing resets. I never was able to get the T3 to sync with Outlook. Every time I try to do a search it crashes and the battery life is pretty poor and the lack of a replacable battery creates some problems. Yet, I use it everyday for som many things and it is still getting the job done.
I'm really looking forward to the challenge of a new platform. I'm excited about the greater possibilities the Axim offers. I am hoping that it can replace my laptop in a lot of things I do, both at home and on the road. The only downside is all investment I've made in Palm programs that I won't be able to use any longer.
Anyway, thank you everybody for your responses! It's very comforting to know there is such a helpful group of people when problems arise.

I second this method I have had mine for a few months now and I am still testing software. Once I finalize everything that I am going to put on My X51v I will hard reset and do a fresh install of everything and then make a backup. So I can restore to this point whenever the need arises.
Thank you for your replies and for voting. I think the poll gives a more accurate view of the Axim experience than you'd get just reading through the posts. The vast majority didn't have any problems at all.
