replacing lcd on x51v

Any tips on how to replace the LCD on the x51v? I have seen a few posts how to do it, just wondering if there is anything I need to look out for when disconnecting the ribbon cables from the motherboard? I can't tell if there are clips that need to be unlatched or something, or if I just gently pull on t he ribbon cable, should it come out?

Thanks!

Gentle pulling was all i needed on my X50v, and i can't imagine the 51v being any different.

Just for interest, is this economically worth doing, or are you just doing it to see if you can, like I would?

This is definitely the most economically feasible approach for me. Because the screen got damaged as a result of a drop, it isn't covered by Dell's warranty. Of course they offered to replace it for $339. If I send it off to a third party to have it repaired, that would cost a minimum of $200. So, I found an LCD with Digitizer on Ebay for $69.

Under NO circumstances should you ever pull on a ribbon cable without first releasing the latches - you will damage the contacts:exc:

Have a look at one of my earlier posts from last week where I explain how to do this. To look for my posts, click on my name to the right and selct "find other posts from this user".

Good luck.

Thanks, bigbop. I am a little unclear about what else needs to be disconnected other than the two ribbon cables. Do I really need to do anything with the button board or the ir cable? I am awaiting an LCD+Digitizer, which I will replace as a unit.

Here is a picture of the current state of my Axim. Do you all agree with me that the LCD needs to be replaced? (It may be a little late to ask this, as I have already ordered a replacement). The device works flawlessly otherwise, including the touchscreen, leading me to conclude that the problem must lie in the LCD itself.

Just need a little reassurance from the community! (or a reality check).

Thanks, everyone!

Before you replace the display, open the case, release the clamp on the display's flex cable, gently pull the cable out and push it all the way back in, then while holding the cable pushed in, close the connector clamp.

I've had my unit apart a few times while I've been working on my project here and one time I didn't push the flex cable all the way in - it caused a similar problem to what you've shown. When you dropped your unit, the connector may have been jarred a little causing partial connection loss.

Thanks, I just took the unit apart again, and double checked the LCD connection. Looks solid, and I lifted the black latch and made sure it was the cable was pushed in all the way. Still the screen looks the same. Rats! I was hoping that would have fixed it.

Will update after installing the new LCD...should be here late next week!

Screen replaced!

Hi, just wanted to give an update. The new lcd with digitizer arrived. I successfully removed the old one and installed the new one...very carefully!

That fixed the LCD issue! Now everything works well...except I can't get the digitizer to calibrate perfectly. It works well, but every now and then I notice that it does not respond accurately. Like when I am typing, it will type a key one or two rows above the key I press. Not always, but sometimes. It does it also without a screen protector.

I am contemplating taking the unit apart again to try to reseat the digitizer cable. Anyone else ever experience this?

sounds like my current problem with my digitizer. Actually I also bought one on ebay as well just a few days ago and I'm hoping to replace my current faulty digitizer. Perhaps you may want to dissemble it and re do it?

Big Smile Success in replacing LCD and Digitizer!!

Finally, it seems my x51v is behaving like new again!

I used the digitizer that originally came with the unit, separated it from the bad LCD (after carefully reading the posts and links on this site on how to do it), then combined it with the new LCD. Really not that difficult, thankfully! Sadly, I didn't take pictures as I was doing it.

Now off to find a good protective case!

Did you get your questions answered? I just replaced my screen. Since your post is from Jan, I suspect you have already replaced it by now. If not, Yes there are latches which should be disengaged to remove and replace the new connectors and then re-engaged.
