very NEW and need some help. PLS

Just ordered my Axim x51v and am completely overwhelmed by all the info. on this site (i think it's great, i'm just soaking it all in). I'm sure you get sick of posters like me but after looking through a ton of threads I'm still unsure what I should do right away. I know people have expressed problems with certain things if they didn't fix them upon getting their Axim. Out of the box, what should i do? I have a list of software that I've pieced together from different threads, but what fixes or maitenace should I do right away? Please help. I'm not good at all this stuff so any advice/help is MUCH appreciated! Thanks.

Welcome MKnight
1st thing I would do is to check your x51v version.
start --> settings --> system --> system information --> look at Rom version.
If you have A012, you could basically ignore (if you wish) all the upgrade to A012 thread

I got my X51v a week ago now. The ROM was A12 so I was ready to go straight out of the box. I just charged it up and then started installing the programs that I was going to use. If you have bought it new then its probably A12 ROM.

If it's A12 out of the box, you shouldn't have to do anything at all.

But I would recommend that at some point you turn the backlight down (I have mine on the lowest above off completely) because it will save you a lot of power.

You might be tempted to go crazy installing loads of software, try and hold yourself back (a little!), because generally the more you install the slower it will get, at least in my experience. Today plugins and programs that run in the background checking or monitoring things usually have the most issues out of everything you can install.

The other thing to remember is that (I'm sure you know about this) when you "close" programs with their "X" buttons, they actually just go into a special minimised state where they will go straight back to where they were when you reopen them. This is useful, but minimised programs like this do use up resources (RAM and sometimes CPU), so if you notice your Axim slowing down, go to Settings -> System -> Memory -> Running Programs and close them completely from there. You can also reboot with the reset button for the same effect, or use a 3rd-party task manager or the Dell Switcher bar :)

aboard. a12 and you are good to go.

You will have to decide if you will stay with the Microsoft Stack or change it to the widcomm stack. I think there are issues with the the Dell branded GPS map software. I have been very happy with the widcomm stack.

After that I would organize your contacts that you want to sync and perform a sync operation before you load a lot of software.

Finally backup, backup, backup. For me, must have software is a good file manager, a program to fully close applications, a software power option and of course backup software. There are freeware and commercial ware options for all of the these except the back up. Check out MyPDA for program suggestions.

Good Luck and have fun.

thanks

Thanks for the welcome and the information. I didn't know that the programs wouldn't close with the 'X.' What's the major difference between the Microsoft and Widcomm stack? As you can tell, I don't know that much about this stuff (that's why I'm here). So thanks for helping. Any tip will be helpful to me.

Dell has not implemented some of the profiles in the Microsoft stack such as the headset and handsfree. The manager isn't as intuitive as well. Others can give you other differences.

In an attempt to keep programs fast and responsive the X doesn't close programs. The problem is you can forget what you have open and quickly run out of memory. There are several free programs - MagicButton and VBar that let you choose whether to close or switch the active program. There are also commercial problems that offer the same functionality as well as other enhancements all in one package. ILauncher is one such program.
