Can you password protect a specific folder?

Hi, I was wondering if there is a way a password protecting a certain folder? Any software that can do this without encrypting the file?

Cheers

no...
but you can try FreeOTFE.
it's a free encryption system.

The file system is created much like a unix.
1st you create the file system (or file) with a given size (say 100mb).
Then you mount it (mount filesystem).
From PDA point view, it's just another folder (with 100mb size). But no one can touch it once you unmount--> either through manually, take the sd/cf card out, or softreset.

I've tried a lot of encryption software, this is on the top of my list.

Resco is your answer

This one does what you want. I have it on my Axim. You can encrypt a single file or a folder (or multiple files and folders). You can zip an entire directory and then set a password on it. The cool thing is that the tool will also be available on your PC. So you can encrypt any file on either PC or PDA.

Works great. :approve: I have had it for over a year now. It's about $25. Here's the link:

EDIT: I just re-read your question. Why wouldn't you want the file or folder encrypted?

Thanks for the replies.

GeneD: I am not up to speed on encryption but doesn't it take time to encrypt/decrypt a file? Am I wrong? I am happy with just a password to access the file.

thanks

Spaceman Spiff,

Yes encrypting and decrypting does take time. I took some measurements for you to get an idea of how long it takes. I left the Axim in the cradle so that my processor does not change speed based on battery level during this test.

41M bytes of data (26 files in one directory)

128 bit encryption:
Decrypt approximately 55 seconds
Encrypt approximately 1 minute 6 seconds

In my humble opinion, if it is important enough to warrant a password on a specific file or directory, it's probably worth the wait to fully encrypt it. It really hasn't bothered me to wait for it to complete.

Hope this helps.

GeneD: Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to give me some encrypting/decrypting processing times. :)
