Numerous times over the last few seasons, I've spotted an Axim being used by the CT agents...
Again, last week (Monday Jan 22nd), the Axim was STILL being used! CTU agents used the Axim to display a name to a person, and it was quite clear it was the x51v that was used.
Now my question is this - isn't it very strange for a DISCONTINUED pda to be used for product placement?? I would assume they would use a brand new pda that a company is trying to sell, as opposed to a PDA that has been discontinued.
Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE my axim - when I heard Dell wasn't producing them anymore I was very sad, but it just doesn't make sense that a new show would use old items for product placement.
Does this perhaps mean Dell is going to get back into the PDA business? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was pretty sure Dell was getting out of PDAs...
I think you're just reading too much into it. I don't think a majority of viewers would buy something that they don't even recognize. If that's advertising then it's not going to be effective. I don't think viewers would even care what device it is let alone the brand. They will be drawn into the story and not onto the devices. For example, there are a few other devices used, how many can you identify?, how many do you think of the regular viewers would bother to know what they are? Only Axim users would be interested to recognize that those are X51V's, and maybe a select observant few non-Axim users. Product placement, perhaps, but I'm betting if it's the case, Dell is advertising the Dell logo rather than the PDA itself since the logo is readily identifiable than the x51v writing which is hard to view even directly a few feet away in front of you, and a lot harder to view on TV.
What other Dell device could have been used in place of an Axim for that scene you described? You want them to shove a 17inch notebook in the guy's face?
Yep I saw it too. It also pushed me over the decision edge to buy one. I've been looking at the for a long time. I ordered on yesterday! Being a palm addict, I have a Treo 700P, TT/X, and a Lifedrive this will be my first non-palm pda in a while. Hope I will like it!!
Obviously you guys don't know much about the entertainment Industry... believe me, EVERYTHING you see onscreen is there for a reason - they don't drink a can of soda without paying some corporation a million bucks.
ESPECIALLY on something as big as 24...
You're right, I'm likley just reading too much into it, but mark my words, dell paid a fortune for that spot.
Whether or not it's to get rid of a huge inventory for Dell, or something else, it was used for a reason...
It's probably more brand advertising than device advertising. If you think for a minute that it's going to boost the X51V sales to the point that Dell will be interested in continuing the Axim line, think again.

it's the opposite; the corporation pays 24 to display that in-show. in this case, Dell pays Fox $x thousands to have the actors use the Axim

I think that's what he said...Dell paid FOX for that spot....

I agree with the OP tho...they could've used any PDA. In past seasons, it hasn't been an Axim. Shoot...they could've wrote it on a piece of paper. I also agree that that its probably name placement because all the monitors in CTU and the White House have branded a DELL Logo.
Despite rumors to the contrary, and news reports which cited them as facts, Dell never discontinued the Axims, never stopped producing them, and has not left the PDA business.

When did you talk to Dell. Because I talked to them yesterday the guy said they cant send me a new replacement because they are NOT Producing AXIM's anymore. They are getting rid of their Refurbished inventory. And they clearly said they will not produce axim x*** anymore. Now that doesn't mean that they are getting out its only they wont be making any more axims. They might come out another Mobile device but as for now who knows. Just let time tell its story. There is no point for all this rumors. Comeon ppl.

I wouldn't take at face value anything said by Dell customer service in that line. Usually they're just parroting whatever they've heard online or through rumors at work--management definitely does not keep them well informed.
In any event, there has never been any official acknowledgement or even implication from Dell HQ that they're changing their current stance on the Axims.
More to the point, if they were going to discontinue the Axims, they likely would not have continued to deliver patches and upgrades, as they did a couple of times in December. Nor would they be using the Axims as a front for the Dell logo in their product-placement deal with the TV show "24."
At this moment, I don't see any reason to expect a move from Dell--either further into the market or out of it--until around mid-year.

If that's any indication that they are going to continue with the Axim line, meaning that there will be an X52, then that doesn't mean much. They just released ROM A02 for the X50-WM5, it doesn't mean that the X50 is still in production. As long as they're selling the Axims, they're bound to release updates for them.
Product placement is definitely in play here but I stand by the idea that it's the Dell logo that's being advertised and not necessarily the Axim. Just like somebody pointed out, they're not going to use a Dell laptop in that situation.
