Japanese Dell Axim X51v

I live in Japan, and while Dell is happy to sell English OS PC's...they don't sell English PDA's so I'm stuck with a Japanese one. This is making things very hard since I'm new to PDA's. If it were a PC, I'd have no trouble at all. I'm just wondering, is it possible to flash the PDA and get an English ver. on there? Or am I stuck with Japanese. It's not a big deal, I'll get used to it...it's just going to take longer.

Nice site...took me a while to find it though.:approve:

Follow the process on the following site, it should allow you to reflash your ROM with a different version. Obviously this has the possibility of voiding your warranty but if you *need* english...

Hope this helps.

Not sure if this helps but my first PDA(HP) was purchased in Thailand. Although the pda was capable of writing/reading Thai. Everything was functional in english. You can't even tell it's from Thailand just by navigating around.

But i'm not sure if this is true for the Japanese Products as well. Maybe you can call Dell support or check their forums to see if someone has a definate answer.

You're doing better than I then. I also live in Japan and can never get them to sell me an English OS on their machines fromt eh Japanese site. Of course, I never really tried either.

I use x50v with WM2003. You're better off just getting use to the Japanese. It's really not that difficult to get around with it and it's a great way for you to improve your Japanese.

One note though. Most programs will work fine on the system as is so there shouldn'T be a problem. When you install programs, make sure you check which folder it is placed in though. The English programs will often look for files in an English titled folder and never see the Japanese named folder. Your 'start menu', 'games', 'start up', and 'program' folders are the ones to watch out for.

Enjoy your new toy!

The Win Mobile OS runs fully on Japanese. Unless you know Japanese, it might be hard to use for a windows mobile beginner.

In that case ebay it. I got mine off ebay for a great price. Even after shipping it was cheaper then buying off dell.ca (discounted) which was also a hell of the process.

It came with the upgraded rom as well. So happy here. :)

No offense, but the Japanese OS is pretty simple. Almost everything is either labeled in English, labeled in katakana of English words, or the icon is obvious even if you can't read it. I recommend you spend 2 hours to learn katakana, then download an English version of the manual--the screens look identical, so by looking at the manual and your PDA you can figure out even the stuff you can't read at all. And since you're in Japan and have this wonderful Axim, you might as well use it to help you with Japanese. If you convert it to English, you won't be able to use it for Japanese at all (while the Japanese OS is perfectly comfortable with English). Check out Japanese Language Tools for how to set up some great free dictionaries.
