If your power button is set to default you should be able to press and hold it to turn off the backlight. If not, go to settings, system, power, powerbutton tab, anc check that it is set to "Dim/Light the Display"

Take note, though, if it's an X50, then the screen will only turn off while hte button is depressed (X51 has this fixed). To get around this, press the button and while it's pressed, flip the lock switch, let go of the button and after a moment unlock it. Now, pressing the button will turn the screen ON while it's depressed. If you want it back to normal, hold it down so the screen is ON, then lock a few moments and unlock, and everything's back to normal.

That's one of the coolest tips I've seen in quite a while! Many thanks!

i use the GSPlayer and it got the features you're looking for:
it has a "Display Off" funktion. i configured the player that if i press
"Button 6" (WLAN Button) the display turns off or on.

it also has a sleep timer funktion wich turns your axim off after
some time. it supports most of the music codecs. i only got some
trouble with the newest wma files.

google for "GSPlayer"

psShutXP has the option of turning off the screen. I have it as a button in WisBar Advance so i just hold it down for a sec and the screen turns off. Press the power button and it turns back on. Very easy and convenient and saves serious battery life.

I would suggest use some small toolkit such as "handymenu" and assign a hard button to the software. Then you'd be able to turn off the screen at anytime by bring up the toolkit and select the screen-off option.
