Aximsiteactivesyncicon transferring WORD files to PC

Dumb question maybe but stay with me please.

I'm off for a years travelling soon (in Australia) and want to write up my blog on the Axim (X51V with ROM A01) via BT as I go. I'll type into the Ax daily and then want to transfer the text to a PC in an intternet cafe or library every few days or so.

Can I do this without using Activesync and/or am I likely to find this on most computers (is it a widely-used programme?)?

Your blog can be put on SD or CF cards supported by your PDA. Acquire a USB multi card reader or specific reader for either SD or CF card. After each session just stick the card in the reader and connect to the PC's USB port. Hopefully the PC's that you'd be using will run Windows 2000 or above, in which case it automatically recognises the USB as an external drive allowing you to load up your blog. Sandisk sell a type of thumb drive (memory stick) that doubles as a card reader.

Have you thought of upgrading your ROM to A12 (latest version)?

Thanks Borgyn - as simple as that eh?!

I have thought about the A12 upgrade but to be frank I'm wary of digging myself into a hole I can't climb out of! I did get the old power dissipation problem the other day and I don't want that happening whilst I'm on the road. Mebbe if I get brave enough....?!

Something like this:? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Kingston-2-GB-...QQcmdZViewItem

Why isn't it possible to connect the Axim directly to a USB port via a suitable lead?

The pen drive looks fine. The Ax can connect directly to a USB port using Activesync. What this process does is it bypassses the need to load up Activesync on every PC and remember you can only pair your Ax to 2 PCs. I don't know if anyone has written a program which removes the need for Activesync.

Your link shows a Kingston SD. There have been some problems reported with that brand.

The price on 2GB Scandisk is way down now (regular SD, not enhanced; do not use enhanced or ultra). There are many card readers available.

I've had a look at this, but I'm not sure what advantages it offers. From previous replies I understand that I can simply remove the SD or CF card containing WORD files and insert in a USB card reader for export to a PC, so I imagine the only advantage of this software is that I don't need to remove the card from the Ax to do this?

It's just a thought but the MS software will save it as Pocket Word rather than the usual .doc format - so it may be easier to use some freeware like Pocket Notepad from Tillan Soft and create .txt docs. the big advantage is that .txt are smaller and more universally recognised.
