Likely a Dell Axim X51(V) since this was posted in the X50 /X51 forum and WM5 was mentioned, right?
Without more information my hunch is that you are only minimizing programs, rather than closing them.
Go to Start/Settings/Memory/Running Programs. If you have several listed there you might consider installing a task manager (e.g.: MagicButton; vBar; iLauncher; PocketPlus; ...).

My x50v (WM 2003 SE) also has times that it takes 10 or 20 seconds to respond after being turned on. In my case, it seemed that the PDA was waiting for the Wi-Fi to come on; turning off the Wi-Fi when I wasn't using it, solved the problem for me.

I'm not sure this is still a problem with WM5, but slow response times used to be associated with memory cards. If they do not have a My Documents folder, PPCs will add a 0 byte file named ignore_my_docs and the device will search the entire directory of the card for programs and/or files each time it boots up.
The solution in these cases was to add a My Documents folder and delete the file (you have to do it in that order or the device ill add back the file before the folder is created).

hi
i have a x51v
i installed all the programs on the sd card.
From startup (as in, the device was OFF)
response time can vary, from 5 to 30 seconds.
From standby, sometimes its 5-6 seconds, other times it can be 30seconds! usually i just soft reset!
Usually i just have 1 programs running, and this is still a problem
The D pad works, but the stylus doesnt!
There is a MY DOCUMENT folder on the SD card and PPC :(
any way to solve this?

Hard reset every few months and your pda won't be lagging down. Just like regular computers, PDAs need a fresh start once in a while.

I did use Magic button and liked it a lot. But after I did an hard reset recently, I have not installed it againyet and find that the Switcher Bar that comes loaded in the x51v works very well now. I think that was one of the fixes with the A12 upgrade. It has the same "Close Current Window" and "Close All Windows" that Magic Button has.

Try this.
Get a copy of Dinarsoft's MEMMAID from the link below. http://www.dinarsoft.com/memmaid/summary.html
Instal this, and use the "Notification Queue" tab to "Find Duplicates" - delete them. My guess is there is that there iwill be many dup's, some of these are events to run on power on, so this should really help!
You can use it as a trial to do the fix, but I was so impressed that I bought a copy and clear down duplicate entries when I get slow responses from my X51v.

My X50v with WM5 (A02) also lags once in a while, but I think the problem in my case is the darn Activesync. Whenever it slows down, I go to Settings\System\Switcher Bar and the AS is there! I kill it manually and it works fine (until the next sync). I did apply the fake server trick to block AS trying to come on constantly in between syncs. In addition, the stupid AS crashes in the background and drains the battery (lots of fun!).
The funny thing is that I use Wisbar Advance and AS does not show up under current running applications, while Switcher Bar shows it... Does MagicButton have anything more than the built-in Switcher Bar? Is there any other that I should look into?
As mentioned here, using a taskbar may help, as well as installing some of the applications to main memory. Unfortunately, it is just a big game of "trial and error".
Good luck!

I really hate responses like this, but the man speaks the word of the Aximgods. A hard reset can do wonders for PDAs
