How can I disable Wireless Zero Configuration?

Hi everyone

A real techie one here!

I am writing a program for my Dell Axim X51v which requires me to disable WZC. The reason is that I need to call down to the NDIS functions and this is not possible if WZC is running.

It seems that on a PocketPC the way to do this is to remove the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\ZeroConfig. There are also a couple of applications on the net (e.g. WZCDisabler.zip) which disable WZC on PocketPC, and they seem to do this by removing this entry.

The problem is that the Axim will not allow me to remove this registry entry, either by using one of these programs or with RegEdit! It is possible to remove the values inside the key, but not the key itself, and thus I have failed to stop WZC. :realmad:

So please, if you have any idea how else I can stop Wireless Zero Configuration please tell me!

Thanks,

MrToes

Oh good luck, I had no idea that crazy utility was in our x51v's! I had to disable it on my laptop when using the router, it kept dropping my connection every 5 minutes while searching for something better; I've since gone to using the utility for my wireless notebook card by Linksys and no drops since then.

No more WZC!

Well it appeared that deleting the contents of the key was in fact enough (even though it wouldn't kill the key itself), but what I had to do was to simply disable wireless networking (with the key on the left of the PDA) then re-enable it. No more WZC!

If you are interested in simply not having WZC as a user, don't go to all that hackery, just use Odyssey instead to connect to networks. When it is enabled it automatically disables WZC and there is no funny network jumping business.

Unfortunately I've found out the process of authenticating with WPA networks with the NDIS drivers is an absolute nightmare but that's another story...

I'm glad you are resolved with your problem. I have no dropping of connection on my Axim, I was speaking of problems on my laptop when I had it set to use WZC for the network connections; I solved it by downloading and using a utility for my wireless network card from Linksys; I killed the WZC on the laptop and use this utility only; it has never dropped a connection.
