i read few threads around here about faulty battery hatch. I have the same problem and it drives me crazy to the point that i want to sell my axim. I mean i paid $370 for this unit and the battery hatch is completely loose (1mm space). dell really has a poor quality control (nothing new). anyways there has been a couple of apparent solutions to this problem:
1. use masking tape on the right foot
2. get replacement hatch
I don't feel like i should have to use a tape to keep my brand new $370 axim running. This is absurd. And i don't feel like calling dell and being re-directed all around India for 2 hours before actually talking to someone. Is there anyway to turn off that alarm using some kind of crack or cut off the sensor with a knife?
Sorry to say, but if the unit is new and in the warranty period I would call
Dell or use the on-line service. I've had good luck with that. More than likely they replace the unit for you. I've heard of others getting new units for things like this. It's worth a try and what do you have to lose?? Like you yourself said why should you have to use tape to keep a new unit running? I have a habit of pursuing things and getting things done. What do you have to lose? you may just get a new Axim out of it!
okay i might get banned for this:
but here is what i think of dell customer service ->
in order to argue with a stupid person you have to get down to his level to prove him wrong. i really don't want to get down that low.
Matt , been there done that, but truthfully? I have pretty good dealings with Dell on a few issues. In fact I talked to someone in Los Angels LOL! He spoke perfect English. Give it a try. You might be surprised!? It's worth the effort in my opinion. Would you rather try and get a new unit or go by tape lol and stab at your Axim with a knife!? I just wish you'd give it a whirl with them first. Ya have nothing to lose. I've seen many on the site here have their units replaced due to faulty items!
Best of luck to you on this and hope you get the issue resolved in a positive manner.

Not sure why your comment here would result in a banning... Aximsite is not supported by Dell you know...
Anyway, I'd give firedude's suggestion a second consideration. If your device is brand-new, I think it would be worth the effort. Who knows, it might not be as bad as you think. ;)
I had the same problem, what I did and has been successful was to put a thin and little piece of tape on the bottom inside the battery latch. I hope that helps.

You can buy a replacement cover here if you wish to go that route and save the hassle. You have to make sure it's the hatch is the problem and not the switch.

same prob plus charger dock insert thingy broke..the x50v is now drawer-ed...away
:(
on the other hand, i'm back to my love, the x3i :)
see that's what i was concerned about before i bought my axim. I've noticed that many cell phones use similar charger connectors as our axims (except that cell phone conncetors are a bit smaller). Now EVERY cell phone that I used, with axim type of connector, eventually stopped charging with the charger. I have no idea how come they dont use simpler charging connectors or even separate charging connectors.
After a year of using a 2200mah battery in my Axim, I started getting the battery latch problem a few weeks ago, I tried the tape trick and that worked for a few days, but then the tape slipped.
I ordered a new 2200mah battery off of eBay for $15, and went back to using the standard 1100mah battery in the meantime.
When I'm using the standard battery, I have no problems at all. And the new battery arrived the other day with a new cover, and that works great as well. So now I've got two extended batteries and two standard batteries -- which works out great, because I've got a long flight to take next week, and now I should have enough juice to watch movies the whole way. :)
Anyway, I'd definitely suggest looking into getting a spare battery cover or an extra extended battery, which would probably include a new cover.
