Aximsitex50icon What should I replace my X50v with? Opinions please!

My x50V is working well and I have been very pleased with it. I even tried to do the Windows 5 upgrade but tucked my tail between my legs and went back to 2003 se.

I have many accessories for the unit and I would hate to have to replace things. Also I love the VGA screen.

Eventually it will die.

Short of getting an X51V I'm at a loss to figure out what to get. I am considering getting more batteries since I can use them for both the X50V and a potential X51
v. I will probably wait for a sale at Dell.ca (which they have several times per year).

I'm not particularly interested in a Phone/PPC.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

Stick with the X51V and get a two year protection coverage.

Save your money. There's really no standalone Windows Mobile device better than the X50v/X51v. By the time your X50v dies (if it ever does), there will probably be something much better out and you'll want to get that :). For now, no point in upgrading.

How do you get protection on a product you already own? I thought it was only offered on new purchases?

Dell will let you extend the warranty. Up to 5 years I think? But I guess the catch would be that the original warranty still be in force.

Based on what I've seen happening at CeBIT this past week, in another year or so you may have the option to buy a device that is slightly bigger than the X50v, but runs a full Windows OS. See this video.

If you sign up at Dell Support and put in your systems' service tags, then click on the service tag number, you get a screen with 3 tabs, one of which is "Service Contracts and Warranties" and then click on the "View Purchase Options" link. You can get up to 5 yrs (from date of initial purchase) original warranty extensions and complete care for the same time frame. Below link is to Dell Support.

What does it cost?

I am afraid mine expired in Feb :-( Tech support is useless. They wanted $299 for a replacement with a 90 day warranty. This was before I figured out how to replace the ROM via an SD card for a sellers bricked update.

While it is true that your X50V will eventually fail, there really is nothing to be gained from future-tripping about that eventuality, unless of course, you relish in awfulizing.

I suggest that you simply enjoy your X50V while you have it and procrastinate about the rest until it becomes neccessary to deal with.

i like this UMPC but honstly this one is still too big to fit in my pocket. I found axim to be very optimal size in my jeans. It's not too thick and not too big. In my opinion anything bigger than axim is simply not practical even if it runs Windows XP. Heck why not just carry your own laptop. By the way you can get laptops that are thinner than some UMPCs....
However the day that UMPCs becomes the size of an axim I think will be the day that smartphones dies (this will be the happiest day in my life!).
if you really enjoy your x50v and it meets all of your needs I would definitely get x51v. if one dies you will have another one and since you already have all the accessories you will be set. if you wait until your x50v dies (lets say a year from now), it might be hard to find x51v in good condition and if you settle for another device your accessories might now work.

i have an 8525 and having a convergence device is the way to go with me. i was really not into watching movies, or playing complex games on my dell. the 8525 does everything that i need and the keyboard is awesome and very fast. also having 3g internet all of the time is a big plus. last but not least carrying one device is great.

the downside is the screen size. if you are editing docs and spreadsheets it really makes a difference.

i ended up going with a phone and i have a ultraportable convertable tablet to do all of the grunt work.

Agree with the post from socpsy. Forget PDAs.

Small laptops will evolve to be truly seamless and fullfeatured in a year or two.

If you are a camera buff a good DSLR is worth it, similarly if you are a mobile PC buff a small full featured laptop is worth it too and the size will be acceptable very soon.

i would say, use your warranty to talk to dell on chat support.

and get them to give you a free x51v for it not workign and having to deal with it.

Too bad I didn't see the option to extend my warranty on my X50v last year before my warranty expired. I must have overlooked it or something, since it was around the time I was getting the second replacement.

Too honest to sell the dead pda on eBay :)

Guess I could try to dissemble the thing, see if there is something obviously loose.

Glad I didn't go ahead last fall and buy a GPS solution specifically for the Axim.
