Ax 51v - wifi - dial-up internet

I have searched in vain for solution to the following:
My lap-top connects to internet through dial-up 56k modem line and is also connected to my home network via an Asus router. My Ax 51v connects easily to the network and sees the lap-top files, but how on earth should I set up lap/Ax to enjoy the internet surf connection from the Ax? I have really tried a lot, but unsuccsessful! Have not found the relevant formula on the forum either. Could anyone help a newbie with a detailed explanation, please, how to set up both parties!!

You need to set the laptop to share it's internet connection through the router. But I don't remember how to do it. Hopefully someone else can tell you.

The other way is to connect to your laptop via active sync using bluetooth and surfing that way. Doesn't have the range of wireless but it does work.

ICS is the answer and Windows on your laptop has a decent help file plus a wizard for setting it up. The problem people sometimes run into is ICS uses 192.168.0.1 as the IP on the laptop and acts as a DHCP server for assigning IPs to the other devices. Your router also wants to assign IPs and (in the case of Netgear and D-Link brands of routers), also use that IP as the router's default IP.

You cannot have two devices with the same IP nor two DHCP servers on the same network so you need to disable the DHCP on the router and reset its IP to a different last number (for example, you can use 192.168.0.100).

Worried

Thanks for the replies!
My Asus-router (192.168.1.1) has an enabled DHCP function and assigns IP-address 192.168.1.2 to my laptop. The laptop is connected to the router by wire when I have the dialup internet communication, and wireless when I connect to my home computer network (easy??). The Axim is communicating wireless through the router when connecting to the laptop with internet.
You still think I should disable DHCP in the router. The laptop is set up with ICS sharing functionality.

I'm confused - are you just trying to use the dialup/ICS/Asus away from your home network?

If that's the case and you have wireless capabilities on the laptop, the router is superfluous. You can just set the laptop and Axim to ad-hoc mode and let ICS provide an IP in the 192.168.0 range to the Axim.

I know this must seem confusing - thats why I'm seeking help.
It's all about my home network. When I connect to internet via modem/dialup my laptop is placed in a cradle wich in turn is connected to the wireless router by a physical wire. (The laptop has also wireless capabilities on its own, and do connect wireless when not i cradle. But then it is not internet-connected.)
So when laptop stays in cradle and is connected to internet I wish to connect my Axim wirelessly through router to laptop to share internet connection.
The laptop and Axim communicate (explorer:\\open path), but I cannot catch the internet. This is frustrating!!

OK, that's a little clearer. Back to the earlier post - you'll need to disable the DHCP functions on the router, set it onto the 192.168.0. IP set and allow ICS to provide the IP numbers. I'm not sure if you want the laptop's connection to be into the WAN port or just one of the LAN ports of the router so you might try both ways.

You might also need to resort to a static IP on the Axim. If you do this, the IP should be something other than 192.168.0.1 and also different from whatever you use on the router. The subnet is 255.255.255.0 and DNS is 192.168.0.1.

These unusual setups are not really what the router was designed for, so they can be difficult to get working. Good luck.
