In the Axim vernacular they say "Full Power Off" and continue to say "the alarm settings will be ineffective," when one holds the power button down. I took them at their word.

I have it set so the power button dims the display. Is this what is causing me problems? I have it set like this so I can turn it on fast when I"m using it at the hospital. Should I set the power button to turn it completely off when its not in use like when I'm at home? Then just charge it over night or something?

Axims and PDAs in general are instant on devices, that's why they're never truly off unless you take the battery out. There's no "boot up" time like with a PC or Laptop.

In your case I would say set the power button for OFF and if you have a favorite program running, just leave it open and when you power on there it will be in less than a second.

Leaving the screen on (even dimmed) is a humongous battery eater, the screen is what uses up your battery faster than just about anything else.

Actually it is the light in the screen that uses more power then the rest of all the components.
Leaving the screen on with the light off though, means it is still in on mode (processor fully functional). Turning the screen off will put it into a low power mode where the alarms will wake it to full power mode. If you leave a program running and turn off the screen, the program will still be there when you turn it back on.

FWIW, I leave mine running, mostly dimmed, for eight-hour shifts daily with no problem then it recharges while I'm off. I prefer leaving the power button set so holding it in powers the unit down (to whatever level). This seems to work for my purposes, at least.
