Digitizer from hell?
Hello all. I don't hang around here much, but I've been shopping for a new handheld recently and have, on my Axim x51v, consistently run into one HUGE problem that I don't ever want to encounter again.
My digitizer (Provided that that is the hardware component that determines where the screen is getting poked? I was told that) is *crap*. It is the most inaccurate thing in the world:
--Constantly when trying to use the onscreen keyboard the most random buttons get tapped.
--Sometimes when I am drawing a line, the 'detected touch' shoots up an inch and a half and then back down to *around* where it should be.
--I realign my screen about five times a week, trying to minimize this problem -- and even immediately after realignment I do a horizontal-vertical line test (Something I thought up on a really busted Palm m100 -- basically go into the notepad thing and with a ruler, draw the straightest horizontal and vertical lines possible. This grid will show you the specific inaccuracies of the digitizer) and there isn’t a single straight line anywhere – it looks like I was trying to write with a vibrating phone’s antenna
--Basically, I have *never* seen a straight line anywhere on my device—this makes transcriber and letter recognizer especially difficult to use.
--EDIT:I forgot to mention that the problem does get slightly worse with the more beaten up of a screen protector I use, but it's still very-much-so there when I take it off.
Now that I have described my problem, my question is if this is a problem inherent in:
Only *MY* Dell Axim x51v
All Axim x51vs (Meaning any other mobile devices are fine)
Windows Mobile 5 (Meaning every handheld running this operating system can’t draw straight lines)
Please, any information would be of great assistance – thanks <3

I've had ma Ax for over a month now and havce no problems with the screen.
Have you got any screen protector?
If so, try removing it and then try your screen.

I've had this on my x50v, and seems to be a common problem, according to some other posts on Aximsite.
I just got it replaced under warranty.
Apparently, the problem temporarily disappears if you squeeze the front and back of the Axim together at the top right (where your flashing lights are).

I think the problem is with your PDA. I've had my X51v for 1 1/2 years and never had any problems with the digitizer. I don't recall the last time I performed a screen alignment apart from the initial setup after a ROM update. I use my Axim every day.

Good call, I forgot to mention that the problem does get slightly worse with the more beaten up of a screen protector I use, but it's still very-much-so there when I take it off.
Alright, well let's keep the posts coming :) Lol. I'm happy so far with thinking it's only my unit, I'll try squeezing the axim in a bit-- Lol <33

I have had this on and off, every now and then, but never as bad as you describe, I always tap very lightly and I found that when I tap a bit harder this doesn't happen at all.
I think Axim's digitizer is just hypersensitive.

I too, tap the screen almost obscenely lightly. Sometimes I wonder how I actually expected it to work. But I was raised to be gentle with technology, so I'm nervous about accidentally pressing the stylus through the axim :)
I just cleaned under the bezel now, as per your suggestion. Holy. Oh god. That was like cleaning out my couch -- without all the money. I can't believe how many Post-Its I went through. I guess part of that problem is that I keep my axim in my pocket pretty much whever I am standing, and 90% of the time when I'm sitting, I almost feel bad for it now, I wouldn't like it if people kept rubbing dirt in my eyes as I was walking around the office.
I'm definitely going to keep in mind all of these suggestions and get back to everyone on whether or not it has been fixed.
But I'm still open to more ides :)
(P.S. Just removed about year and a half worth of pocket lint from bevel :P)

"That was like cleaning out my couch -- without all the money."
I know what you mean; I do construction work and cary my Axim w/me. It is amazing what can find its way underneath there. I stopped using a screen protector because I believe the edge of it was actually trapping more debris underneath the bezel, but I'm paying for that w/small scratches. I believe though that getting 2+ years out of a refurbished Axim I'm doing fine though.
