Looking for recommendations for essential software
I'm coming into a small amount of money in the next few weeks and I want to use some of it to buy a X51v to mainly use for my CCNA studies and also for other things such as reading eBooks, playing MP3's and using to carry WM-compatible travel guides as well plus various miscellaneous software like notetaking software, financial software, etc and software that would notify me when I need to take my medication for my epilepsy.
I'm currently the proud owner of a Tapwave Zodiac which isn't bad in its own right but now that I have this money coming my way, I've decided that I want to upgrade [and the fact that there's a piece of software that allows me to use a lot of Palm-only software is a bonus as well!]
If anyone has any recommendations for essential software for the X51v, I'd sincerely like to hear them...
if we are talking essential then either sprite backup... or spb backup are the real must haves
tcpmp is an excellent video player... mortplayer is good for mp3 and audio both are free
styetap is your palm emulator...
most apps have a trial.. so see if they work for you before you splash any cash.

Since you are going to be using the Ax to remind you when to take you meds, I recommend investing in a copy of MemAid. My alarms will sometimes stop sounding and I have to use MemAid to go into the Notification cue to delete duplicates to get the alarms to sound again.
I second the need for a good backup software. I personally used Sprite on my old iPaq with WM2003, where losing a charge = hard reset. On Axim, this is not the case, so I am using the automatic full system backup function of SK Tools. I highly recommend it - it's 1/2 of the cost of Sprite, and more importanltly it's an essential, full-featured system utilities suite (not just a backup).
For financial software - I tried probably all of those available on the market. The three best ones, in my opinion, were SPB Finance, Inesoft Cash Organizer and AceMoney. I ended up with Cash Organizer, because it's been the most reliable in syncing with MS Money, and had good overall features. SPB was great feature-wise but wasn't syncing well (YMMV). If you aren't tied to MS Money or Quicken, take a look at AceMoney, it has a desktop version and so you don't have to worry about sync issues (they just use same file). All of them are pretty good in "simple" bank accounts (checking, credit cards). None provide a good solution for either investments or loans - Cash Org doesn't do investments at all (they say it's planned for '08), but it does simple loans; SPB Finance and AceMoney allow to read investment transactions from MS Money but won't let you edit them or enter new ones (the last I checked).
To me, SK Tools (back-ups and clean-ups), PocketBreeze (Today screen plug-in for your PIM), Opera Browser (Much better than PIE), and FlexMail2007 (Great for POP3 Access) would be essentials in that order. Check out some of the MyPDAs on this site to get an idea of what people are running. You'll see a lot of apps that a good number are running and this will give you a sense of what might be worth getting. Good luck and enjoy your new PDA.

PocketBreeze (efficiency s/w?) is the first software I'd install (wonderfully tailorable) and then SK Tools (utilities), Pocket Informant (PIM), TenGO Free (replacement keyboard), Resco Explorer (file manager), iLauncher and eWallet (password/PIN safe). And for a game either Bejeweled 2 or Warring Nations. Oh and PocketWeather (weather reports) is great as well.
