While Windows Mobile generally is far more stable than any Palm user would admit ;), it has some bad downsides that often cause problems:
- It's (partly) Open Source. That wouldn't be so bad in itself, but it's only open to device manufacturers, and they often utilitize it to implement extensions which either have bugs or cause uncommon behaviour the programs don't expect. For example, many iPaqs send two application button presses if you press one. Or some HTCs wake up from standby regulary to update the phone state, and then should go back to standby - but some programs avoid that, because it's impossible to differ that short wakeup from an alarm...
- The standby mode is a major pain in the ass. In a perfect world, going to standby would turn off the screen, send the programs a message to prepare for standby, and enter standby after, say, 10 seconds. Then on wakeup, the system would initialize the drivers, mount the storage devices, and then continue the running programs and send them a "system woke up" message. Sadly, Windows Mobile doesn't. There's no way to do anything before standby, the workarounds for wakeup usually are to slow (the program's noticed about 2-3 seconds after wakeup), and the programs continue running before the drivers were initialized, which causes problems if they use e.g. sound output or access storage card. On some devices, turning it off during a storage card access even destroys the card's file system!
- Buggy drivers and other device specific implementations. OK, that's not limited to PPCs, but the short live circle and the currently difficult way to update them makes it worse.
- Too fuzzy specifications and lots of different implementations. For example, every device has different values (and few even different registry keys) for the backlight brightness. There's no unified interface to use the vibrator (if there's one available). Bluetooth and WLAN are implemented in many different ways without a documented interface. And so on...
- Lots of system extensions. Some tools, like WisBar, PocketPlus, MagicButton, and so on, work quite low level. They usually work fine, though, but in combination whith unexpected system manipulations (see first point) and programs which don't expect that, it sometimes ends up in a mess.
however that prob has to do with the fact that ive used it like 15-20 times in total.
i just wish there was more something like CTRL ALT DEL that would just fix al the shit no matter whats crashing.
i just hate that feeling when, pocket player, gs player have both crashed, the gps program crashed adn you just have this PDA and 3 of my most used programs wont even open without restarting.

Or, what helped me speed up, have a button for a soft reset on your today screen.
I use Pocket Plus for that. On an average working day I will probably soft reset my Axim 3-5 times. Close all app's before doing so but clear 4-8 MB every time.
Since developping this perhaps strange habit I have cut back an estimated 50% on craches. Uninstalling some stuff would probably help too.

Three to five times a day? I would be disappointed if I did that a month!
one little tip - a lot of programs can be closed by tapping ctrl + q on your soft keyboard.
Yup. So does the button in the upper right corner in case one uses Pocket Plus, like I do. But closing an application clearly doesn't allways mean clearing memory too.
Before I soft reset I usually stop all apps (Start -> Settings -> System -> Memory -> Running Programs -> Stop All). And still a soft reset will clear 4 - 7 MB.
Maybe you need 3rd party application to close background program (like wisbar lite) and softreset after long use (like pxshutxp), least youre shutdown the program in proper way.
If you got X50v with WM2003se run a memory slider tweaks, lock and reserve the ram at least 20MB,
Dont let you today screen nag with excessive today plugins,
