So I just e-mailed my company's contact at Dell to get a quote on an Axim X51v via our corporate account.
The reply I received let me know that I would need to place the order by tomorrow, because as of Thursday they will officially stop selling the Axims altogether. They recommended I look into a Pharos or Palm (!?) handheld.
So that's it... the jig is up. I'm really disappointed. I've loved the Axim line since the beginning, and I was finally ready to upgrade my X5. I've seen no other handheld on the market that comes close. All the phones don't support standard SD cards anymore and don't have remotely comparable screens. I really wanted a new Axim.
Yes, I know I can get it on eBay, but knowing it's a dead end for support and such kind of sours it for me. What a sad day.
Just checked Dell's website--the special deals feature is gone; you can still find the x51v for sale by clicking the link over in the accessories column. Better hurry...
I was in Austin a few weeks ago for a conference and met a longtime Tech support worker from Dell. When I mentioned Axims and how great they were, he groaned. He said those tech support calls were always so time-consuming and frustrating. From his standpoint he absolutely hated Axims.
(That said, when I bought Axim x51v as a replacement for my x50v, I haven't needed to call technical support once).
Look at it from Dell's point of view. Tech support calls subtract from their profit margins. Axims required a lot of handholding (although 12 rom seemed to solve lots of issues I had before). If they can't reduce these support costs, then really there is no reason to be selling these devices.
(BTW, I used to work for Dell for a year and a half).
They are still available on the Singapore website, and I suppose on the Malaysian website too (since our stock is delivered from Penang, Malaysia)
Current promotion for x51v is S$639 with a spare 1100 mah battery.
x51 is going for $499
