It would seem to be an amazing thing to be able to carry dozens of books in your pocket especially for long trips, but does it kill your eyes?
Can it actually be as comfortable as reading a paperback?
Also how about battery life on an x51v?
How far into a 6 hour flight am I going to get?

TIA for any thoughts on the matter.
Do you read them in Landscape or Portrait mode? If the former, try switching the orientation.
I use my Ax daily for reading eBooks - never read a paperbook anymore. I have not had problems with the battery, I don't think reading uses that much processor power.
The standard battery last for prox. 6 hours. I normally use lager battery, which last forever :-)
You can change the font size to whatever you are comfortable with. I can happily read ebooks without my glasses which would be impossible for me with a normal paperback.

Aside from the fact that you could reduce your processor rating/power (x51v), you could invest in a larger capacity battery if investing in ebooks is your preferred next step. The combination should provide you with sufficient reading time.
I have been reading eBooks ever since I've owned a PPC, even way back in my X30h days. Though I've tried several readers I have settled on Mobipocket as my favorite (by far, way ahead of Adobe & MS Reader). I must say that I prefer the VGA screen to the QVGA screen, also by far, and do not have any issue with eye strain, with one exception: trying to read an ebook on the beach, or in any other overly bright conditions—as I do most of my reading in my home, or in bed at night, this isn't usually an issue.
Other comments:
1. Reading an ebook in bed doesn't require a book light
2. I've read several books both in print and again on my X51v, and although the page count is way higher on the PPC (usually around 3 times higher, with the font size set to the minimum in Mobipocket), the effort required to turn pages is way less—I've re-programmed the Wireless and Record buttons (on the L side of the X51v) for Page Up & Down, so turning pages is easy.
3. As I carry my PPC EVERYWHERE, it is quite 'novel' to have any novel I'm reading always available.
Disadvantages:
1. Not all books you might want to read are available in ebook format.
2. If you purchase current ebooks, many are Secure, and require a little license fussing to be useable.
I have given up paperbacks since getting my Axim; I did read ebooks on my old Palm but the screen was so small....... now with the Axim it is a delight. I use landscape mode and set my processor to low and screen brightness to low and you can change the font size to something comfortable. It is just fantastic and I have it set up to change pages with a tap on the left or right side of the screen which I do with my fingertip, so need to hold a stylus either.
Really, it is quite good, even with the free ebook or Adobe reader but you can buy the ereader Pro reader for $9.95 I think and that has even more options like changing the background to look like parchment and stuff (never needed that)
I read ebooks all the time. As others have reported, it works well. The one challenge is that in a darkened room even the lowest brightness setting is pretty high, so I end up angling the Ax a bit to reduce the effective brightness. I've used many readers, but currently have eReader Pro as the reader of choice. There is an application that lets you create a compatible eReader book from .rtf, html, .pml and other format files, so it's possible to change formats for books if you can get them into any of those formats. Opened up my library choices!
I also read on my Axim exclusively. A dozen books? I have 125 on my device at the moment. I read in landscape and never have suffered from eye strain. Fictionwise is my store of choice. I love e-books!!
I use it in full-screen, left-justified, portrait mode. Background set to black, font colour set to a pale yellow-gold. Works very well at night (with the display dimmed), as well as during the day.
BTW, I am running version 4.18, as I like that version's full-screen mode better than the current version's. The new version displays the reading progress bar on both regular-screen and full-screen. The older version displays it only on regular-screen, which is my preferene. Pressing the Action button toggles between the two modes, so it's very easy to check progress if I want to, and I get an extra row of text when I am reading.
I agree with Noisy Crow about the background. I set it to black when I am in any well lit area (like outside or next to a window). I find it helps alot with the eye strain.
I use both Mobipocket and eReader Pro. I would consolidate to one if it wasn't that sometimes a book I want is only in one format, not the other. It's easy on the eyes for me, using a black background, as others suggest. It is very nice to read an book at night without needing a light. If all books were available as ebooks, I might consider going fully with ebooks...
