Aximsitemobileicon Memory low - delete files or insert card

Axim X51v - 512 MB CF card - 512 MB SD card.

I keep a diary fragment, written using Word Mobile and stored on a CF Card. From time to time when trying to save the file, about 15-17k, I am told there is not enough memory and that I should delete some data or insert a memory card. (The memory card is already inserted of course.) Usually I can simply Save As to the original file name and place but often that doesn't work. Settings | Memory | Main tells me that I still have 96 MB storage memory free. My CF card has 326 MB free.
Does anyone else have this or a similar problem and more importantly do they have a solution? I have scanned the available threads that might have a bearing on it but nothing so far has turned up.
The problem is frequent but intermittent. Sometimes, even when the file has grown to be relatively large there has been no trouble for several weeks; at other times it happens on every occasion even when there is little in the file. I sense that it might be a fragmentation problem but since neither the memory or the card is a serial device it doen't seem likely.

Hello Lawrie, and welcome to Aximsite. My first observation is that you have used a lot of Main Storage Memory, out of the 256MB on-board memory, the x51v has 192.62MB available for use. I still have 158MB free memory on my Axim. I use both a 2GB SD and a 4GB CF card for storage. Even, though your Word files are not large and you store them on a card, it may be miscalculating something due to your dwindling memory space. What I suggest is you get a larger card (SD or CF) and transfer some of what is taking up all of your onboard memory. Then see if this still occurs. Also, where do you save the Word docs to, the card? Good luck :)

I think your issue is with program memory and not storage memory. Look in start/settings/memory main tab you will see it split in storage vs. program the free program memory. You want as much free on the program side as possible to run programs. The programs in storage do not really affect the program memory until you run them. An exception is when the program you load on to the Axim puts a help file or dll into the windows directory. As you run more than one program on your device at one time the program memory will decrease. With no programs running except Calligrapher, Schema, Breeze, and HTC Close I have about 26 meg available. Some times it says 28 meg but 26 is about the average. You may have less than this. If you do, then check the "running programs" tab in the memory utility. Close the ones you do not need to have running. The default close method on the Pocket PC devices has been to just minimize programs. If you are not running a program that will really close your programs (magic button, HTC-close, V-Bar, Wisbar, p-Bar, etc.) then you are likely loosing program memory due to your programs not really closing. You need to run a program like the ones mentioned. If there is not enough memory available in program memory then when you try to save a file it will not save or the program will crash.

I think, although the previous poster's suggestion may work, is that it's a problem with pocket word. I had a similar problem and couldn't, on a fresh "reboot" and shutting down extras, get it to save a file I had made a single change to when the file was about the size you are talking about.

You can try another program, or perhaps break it into several smaller files, but I don't know that you can make pocket word do it. Good Luck!

Save as a text file

In case of emergency - Save the Word file as a text file, it takes less space and although you will lose the memory hogging formatting you won't lose your text.
