X50V losing settings
X50v w/WM5 is losing programs and settings if left idle for 4 or 5 days and reverting to calibrate touch screen as on initial startup.
Any ideas?
I thought WM5 had persistant memory so this sort of thing wouldn't happen?
I did get the RAM upgrade from PCTechs about a year ago, but hve not had this prolem until about 2-3 weeks ago.
No new programs installed.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

x51v+Nyditot+resolution ext. display
Hello,
I will connect an external display with 800x480 physical resolution to my x51v. With Nyditot I can only choose 640x480 or 800x600 for the external display. Does anybody knows how to setup Nyditot Virtual Display to an resolution of 800x480 for the external device?
Thanks!
Regards,
HLorenz

x50v is not WM5, unless you upgraded. In any case, it's not WM5 that is persistant, rather the storage scheme of the x51v. The x50v, even when updated to WM5, still uses the flash memory to store settings, so after the battery runs dead all is lost.
Note that while WM5 does specify as a minimum hardware requirement persistant storage, there are applications (such as the x50v upgrade) that don't meet this criteria.

Not exactly sure what you meant when you said that WM5 is not persistent but the storage scheme is. As far as I know, flash memory does not need any power to maintain its contents. If it does, all our CF and SD cards would have batteries in them. And all the flash-based MP3 players would lose all the songs when the batteries run out.

Are you sure about that? I always thought that settings and configuration data are stored in either the registry or config files. From what I know, WM5 registry hives are store on flash. Also, in WM5, RAM is no longer accessible as a filesystem (except if you configure a RAM disk), so it is not possible to store config files in RAM either. That means config files have to be stored on internal or external flash.

I personally didn't upgrade to WM5, but this is how I understand it. Maybe another poster who has upgraded can confirm?
Note that there are several hardware differences between the x50v and x51v in respect to battery and storage.

I have tested the WM5 upgrade A02 intensively and can confirm it should not loose settings at all when battery is run down, I am not sure but I think it basically leaves the internal backup battery completely redundant with the WM5 as it utilises persistent storage....the device becomes exactly like your laptop notebook, if you take the battery out or let it run out, once you put a fresh battery in or power supply it just starts up again, unlike 2003SE that will loose the lot and you will have to start all over...so I dont know why your x50v with wm5 is doing that, mine just wouldn't turn on once run down, swapped to the extended battery and it came on again....admittedly I didn't leave it for 4-5 days though, more like a day...

I bought my X50v from dell.ca a few years ago and have this problem. I never upgraded anything, and I can't rely on it as a PDA because it always loses my settings. Is there a way to force it to store my settings on either the CF or my SD card?
