So psShutXP shuts off both the display and backlight. Then it's not quite what I was looking for.

Thanks for the replies!

SPB Pocket Plus has an on-screen dimmer control and it also lets you assign this feature to hardware buttons.

Unless you get the boot up screens when you turn it back on it's only in sleep mode. I'm with the crowd that believes there is no true full power off except the power button hold setting option.

That said, the display switch option available with psxpshut is an easy way to assign light out to a button.

[AFX] "it turns off the whole screen while keeping the pda on."

Mokubai ""Display off" leaves the device on but the display is off."

pinyon "the display switch option available with psxpshut is an easy way to assign light out to a button."

OK, now I'm confused again because different terms are being used to explain how psxpshut works. To me, "turns off the whole screen" would mean that the backlight and the display (meaning the image of whatever your today screen is) is turned off. For comparison, when I turn off my pc monitor, my pc is still on and working just fine, but no display at all.

What I need, to reiterate, is for the backlight only to be turned off by the push of a button, and the display (the today screen or whatever else I need to see) is still on. I want to do this so I can save battery power while in bright sunlight (frequently), but not keep turning on the backlight every time I tap the screen, as it does now by default.

Thanks for all the help so far!

Since I don't use it like you do I decided I'd better do a little testing. psxpshut totally shuts off the display so it will not do what you want. Sounds like the suggestion of something like SBP Pocket plus or something that lets you shut the backlight off is what you need. I know battery pack plus also has today screen dimming control.

Thanks! That's what I needed to know. I appreciate everyone's input on this.
