By flash I was meaning the internal storage memory, it uses the same type of memory as CompactFlash and SD so likewise will not be erased by a magnet.
If the device is recognised by activesync then you can hook it up, explore your device from your pc and then copy/delete any files you like. You can also uninstall software via activesync on your pc. Using this you can at least get rid of most of your personal data....

I'd go with that, maybe a faulty lock switch at that, fiddle with it for a bit, on off on off, it may not be seating correctly

Hey, you can't be helpful all the time... and if you can't be helpful then why not try for 100% unhelpful with a dash of silliness?
Heck, I got somewhere near helpful in the end, what more do you want? ;)

Wasn't taking anything personally, or having a go, just having some fun as you seem like a good bloke for a laugh... sometimes this place is a bit too serious.
Still, I keep dragging this thread waaaaay too far off topic.

To all that diagnosed the lock button congrats. Now that Dell sent a new unit I can spend my time figureing out how to backup everything from the old and restore it on the new. Thanks guys.

Does that mean it was the lock button or
you got a new one and you still don't have the data off the old one?

It meant it was the lock button. But I am debating transferring the data from the old to the new and since one has to go back, sending the old one back to Dell.

Consider, the "new" one may be a refurbished unit. If the "old" one was new, you might be better off with the "old." Just thinking...

Check under the battery for a yellow label, which usually denotes a refurb
