Hmm combine this with my X51v/WM6-esc guide and you'll be closer than ever to WM6. ;)
All you'll miss is the WM6/PIE and the HTML inside of Outlook but that can be relized in FlexMail '07.

I'm going to use my 1GB Sandisk card since its FAT32 ready

I will not upgrade until someone answers this:
How much RAM do you have with no programs running, and on the today screen.

@ tjasko

If you have used a Windows Mobile 6 device then the speed is as fast as that (basically its virtually as fast as WM2003SE).

I have SPB Backup running on my today screen and I have just shy of 31mb free space after a soft reset.

The difference in speed between A12 and A17 modified, is like "chalk and cheese", honestly is a massive improvement over Dell's efforts.

No more laggy menus, everything just runs far slicker, well impressed with A17, and as already commented, memory is superb.

I have never used a WM6 device. But since WM6 is faster than WM5, and you said it is faster than WM6, WOW, that is fast.

Wow. That's good to know.
So could I use SPB Backup to restore all of my files? I wonder what would happen. It would replace all of my WINDOWS files. That wouldn't be good.

As with all system updates you are likely to be best off reinstalling all your software from scratch rather than using a backup as files or registry settings that work best with the new setup may be overwritten and degrade your experience. I personally don't even use a full backup after just hard resetting my device, none of the backup solutions I've tried have left me with a "perfect" system after a restore. I much prefer backing up my pim data and anything else that is important and reinstalling programs as I need them.

Go to the Russian website and visit the last page (page 27 at the time of posting) and have a look for a post by makuu with a download link with the text здесь. That is the A17 ROM with the CF support. You then need to download the two fixes (Фикс окон уведомлений (Спасибо paveld) (только для А17) and Fix VGAKEY bug (Спасибо Metazoa) which are listed in the first post of the thread).

Now, format your SD card to FAT32 then extract the contents of the RAR file from makuu. All you should have are two files on the root of the SD Card (DiAd_K_AximX51v_WM5_A17EN.nb0 & DiAd_K_AximX51v_WM5_A17EN_nb0.crc).

Now you need to press Reset while holding the Power button and the Wireless button. After you have pushed Reset, keep holding down the Power and Wireless button's until the SD Boot Loader appears. Now you can let go.

Press the Action key (the one in the D-Pad) to start the process and follow the instructions on the screen. It will take about 10 mins to complete. When it does, it will ask you to hard reset. Do that and the Axim will boot up with A17.

Then you can use your preferred registry tool of choice to import those .reg files you downloaded. They are to fix some of the dialog and display issues arising from this ROM.

Hope this helps. :approve:
Do you need to have an empty SD card (FAT 32) or you can use one with some files in it to whom you copy the files for the A17 ROM?

I had a 1GB SD Card with some .reg files on it and that did not affect the update. As long as you format it to FAT32 (not plain old FAT) you should be ok.
