Possible to connect to the Internet via bluetooth to a razr over a normal ISP?
Hey all, I was wondering if it's possible to connect a Dell Axim X51V to the internet by connecting via bluetooth to a razr v3. My school offers free dial up internet, so I was wondering if I could use the razr as a modem to connect to the dial up service and link that with my axim. My cell phone service provider is AT&T (formerly cingular).
If you use your cellphone, I think you'll wind up getting on AT&T's data network and will pay a premium for it. I could be wrong about this, but I don't think you can use the cellphone to dial into the internet from your pocket pc.

The modem on your cell phone is not a true modem. You need access to packet switching in order to access your isp. Some cell phone carriers provide this others are pretty stingy with it. If I recall folks have gotten it to work with Verizon.
Be aware that if you do get it going, it will be very slow.
Cingular used to have it, but I don't know of anyone who has gotten the setting activated on their phone for awhile.
Check out some of the phone forums for additional information.
GSM based cellphone service, such as ATT/Cingular knows how to differentiate data and voice. In order to get any data service on your Razr, you need something called "MediaNet" at the minimum, which is $20 per month.
I did tried dial up using X51v via bluetooth to my Razr via ATT before and after MediaNet activation. For sure it does not work without data service.
But... and this is key, you need a "dialtone Emulator" which is a little box you plug your cellphone into and then plug a modem into (yes, you'll need a CF or SD modem) Then you can use it to dialup the internet @ 56kbps speeds...
Oh and the emulator hardware is ~ $300 on sale, on ebay... you'd probably come out cheeper just signing up for data service on your cell, since it tends to be ~ $10-15 a month wiht most carriers, that's 30 months of service (at 100+kbps) for the price of the dialtone emulator, the modem will run you another $20-50...
Just as PoC (Proof of concept) I have a friend who's an EE and has done this. IT does work, but it's expensive and crappy speeds...

ok, i want to do this same thing- use my phone to dialup my school's free dialup ISP, then connect phone to my x30 using the phone as the modem...
it looks like it really cant be done easily from some of the replies but im just wondering then why does the x30 have choices/settings in the BT manager for "dialup using bluetooth"? my phone also has dialup via bluetooth listed under its BT services also. so what is all this stuff about? it seems to be exactly what i want but does not work
Most ISP's have disabled this option in their system. The ISP can distinguish a true modem connection from a data connection.

yea- they don't make enough money already so I can understand why they would disable something that would save us poor-folk a few bucks a month. that really stinks for them to wave those options right in front of me like that as if they actually worked.
The only way to dialup an ISP like that it so use a dialtone emulator and a 56k modem. IF you have the former, I have a 56k CF modem I'll sell you, if you're interested. BT to a phone WILL NOT DIAL 56K! you MUST use a dialtone emulator for that.
EDIT:
OT, but if a mod's still reading this, how do I get my bronze medal for being >1year and >750 posts?
