success BT Sync on Vista

I have been following threads documenting problems and solutions BT synching on Vista insofar as I have had at best intermittent success. Finally, a solution that works consistently. Some of this may be superstitious behavior, but I'll stick with it.
I am using X50v w/windows mobile 2003 and new Vista laptop

1. Check BT driver/stack version. Driver should be dated 10/24/06, ver 5.1.2535.0. You can get this from Dell website BT driver application R140135
You will be instructed to uninstall previous version. Do this via add/remove application, reboot and install from R140135 (double click to unzip, installs automatically)
2. Download and install WMDC version 6.1 while the x50v is connected. If instructed to uninstall old version, do so via add/remove programs utility.
3. Once 6.1 is installed, reboot if instructed.
4. Add the x50v via bluetooth utility (rt click icon in tray and select add); let it choose ports and install them [don't worry about com4 issue, it's irrelevant].
5. run the WMDC and click on the connection settings link. Check the box to enable connection via bluetooth. Once you do this, click on drop down menu for com ports and you should see a list including port 3(USB), the two ports set up automatically when the x50v was added, and bluetooth. Choose the port that was set up as incoming and close the dialog box.
[It's not necessary to perform the registry hack for setting bluetooth to a port.]
6. Now explore the bluetooth manager on the x50v and click on "new" to open the bluetooth connection wizard menu. Click on "Activesync via Bluetooth" and click "next".
7. make certain that the computer's bluetooth is set to allow discovery [rt click on the icon in the tray, select "bluetooth settings", then choose the "options" tab on the "bluetooth devices" utility that appears and click in the box next to "allow bluetooth devices to find this computer" and click OK]
8. click "next" on screen of teh x50v that refers to com4; click "next" on screen that refers to activesync setup.
9. You will see connection wizard with names of computers with which your x50v has established a connection. Click on the computer with which you want to sync. You should see a page that offers to set up shortcut for the activesync connection, click finish.
10. You should be able to sync using this shortcut in your bluetooth manager.

It seems to be wise to open the WMDC each time before attempting to synch. While it's not always needed, I've found that when I don't, sometimes the connection drops although the x50v still shows up as connected on the bluetooth devices utility, effectively blocking any further attempts at connection [software glitch, it seems]. Reboot is only thing that cures this... opening WMDC first seems to eliminate the problem.
Hope this works for all as it has for me.
